If I setup the tripod, distance, flash power and all the elements of the shot and have my wife trip the shutter release is that still considered a self portrait? I have done all the work she just hits the button for me. I could use the self timer but when you see my idea you'll see how much of a pain it will be.

I should still call it a self portrait.

If you count down and she hits the button on zero then surely it is a self timer : )
I reckon if you do all the hard work then it's fair enough.

My camera has a remote. I could use the remote, but then it could create a situation where people are like "there's no way you took this shot yourself". In this case, I would avoid using my remote cause it would not LOOK like a SP even though it was.
If this would apply in your situation also, be prepared for the "not a self portrait" comments. People wont know your method, only the final result. Keep that in mind.

I have a cable release, and the workmate who lent it to me has a remote so these things are not uncommon. As usual I *hope* that the voters will keep an open mind, but you're right to point out that it may be a problem.

Maybe I should title it "Slick Self Timing" or "Slick Self Timer" the title would apply in three ways then with Slick, self, and timing all being revelent? What do you think?

Yeah it's a self portrait. Same thing as a remote controle, except you can ask this remote controle to get you a beer.

I had to use the self timer.

The self timer for my camera lets me set up to a 9 hour time delay. If I take a picture of myself, while asleep - does that count ?

I use the self timer...problem is it's only for 12 seconds..
so i have to run everytime...i have to put a stuff animal to the spot as a marker

here's the thing:

if all the wife/husband does is push the button - that's peachy, hunky, and dory :).

BUT

if they're helping you by: looking through the viewfinder to make sure the framing is right; looking at you and making sure the lighting is right; helping you focus the camera on yourself, etc. THEN that is overstepping the self-portrait ideal and they are basically taking the picture of you.

For a self-portrait, YOU need to struggle with the framing, the focus, the lighting, and use the digital iterative process to find the best self-portrait.

As soon as you introduce a second pair of eyes doing these tasks for you while you sit there, it's no longer a SELF portrait.

I agree, but there is no way to "police" someone from preventing that. I guess it's all about the honour system here folks.

finally, im done with my self-portrait...with my fujifinepix...its easier for me...i plugged the cable in my tv set, so that i can view it properly, try some posing...takes a lot of practice...i put an x mark, a chair for focusing...then i set the timer for 10 seconds...run to the x mark...do the posing...then that's it...my self portrait...

i knw my submission will create various reactions...quite intriguing shots...i just used one lighting...a flourescent but it turns out nice.

so good luck to all.

Yeah, but that's the point of this challenge, it is a pain and it's part of the CHALLENGE. I don't think it is fair if your wife trips the shutter, many of us have delt with the issues with self timers and running to get a pose in.

So?
06/17/2003 12:45:18 PM · #15
gordon did say his timer was 9 hours.. by looking at a pic, i doubt you'll be able to tell who exactly has timers this long, and therefore would not be able to pick out anyone who got someone else to presse it for them (if you're being that picky).. it wont matter to me who pressed the button, i'll just rate the pics as i see them and give them the benefit of the doubt.. otherwise i'll be voting forever trying to determine if the photos are feasable or not.

Selfportrait= a portrait of oneself done by oneself.

Not done by oneself with a little help from your spouse.

I am going to vote as if everyone really took a portrait of themselves by themselves, it's just a bit disapointing after working hard on mine without help from my husband (it was tempting) that not everyone did.

well I tried my idea last night and did just that. Set it up flash and all got into position and had her trip the timer. She has nothing to do with framing, positioning, viewing thru the finder or anything she’s just the remote trigger (though I couldn’t get her to get me a beer like Jacko suggested maybe I need an upgrade ;-)

I am going to re-shoot tonight because I want to make some adjustments I found on the monitor. This shot would be impossible with out a remote to trip the shutter. Even with the 10sec timer I would more likely be hurt trying to get ready then anything else. Guess I will just submit it and see what everyone thinks.

Would you vote something like this down. How can you know whether it was taken without help. I shot this with my Casio on which the lens rotates 270 degrees with a remote

The rules committee should probably weigh in on this issue but to my way of thinking there's nothing wrong with having someone trip the shutter for you. There will of course be those that disagree (as you've already seen), but you'll never make everyone happy.

good shot like the cold color of it. Self-portrait in my book remote or not makes no difference
06/17/2003 01:02:48 PM · #21
I hear ya. Its not like shes even checking to make sure Im in the frame because honestly in when she trips the timer im not even in the frame. Shes just setting the 10 second timmer in motion.

I think it should be like the DQ's. Vote it as if it were legal. However I have no problem with someone else simply pressing the shutter

whats that??

yet unlike a DQ, there's no actual way of verifying who took the photo :) which is why i'm basically giving the benefit of the doubt on all of them.. sure some people might be dissapointed someone else pressed the actual button.. but during voting it's not something that should be an issue.

Even if you think it is illegal, thus a Disqualification recommedation, you are supposed to vote as if it is legal.
