why did this picture:

only get a place 155 out of 325 and only 5.065. I found it absolute among my best shot.

i think its right where it should be. nice idea, nice sky, but overall not a real visually appealing photo.

not that it makes a big difference but the title is also lacking

I believe the image in itself is a good one. However, the challenge was to take a photo from the ground up. Eventhough it is obvious that you were crouched at a lower angle, it was still not enough to hit the nail on the head.

There is a nice sense of quiet desolation. I find it an interesting enough image. But it does lack that DPC look. Look at some of the previous ribbon winners and process the way they process their shots. That should get you a higher placement.

If you want to get ahead here, wear the uniform.

I think there's a lack of contrast and saturation

I also think it's where it should be. It lacks a dramatic ground-up perspective and other than an abstract appeal, is generally uninteresting. Additionally, the tree looks a bit out of focus for being the title subject.

As far as being among your best shots - sort your Challenge entry list by the finish percentile and you will find it is #6 in your list, so you are correct. The numbered score is pointless except as it applies to that specific challenge since it is usually a different set of voters and many voters tend to score things relative to other images within the challenge. I always go by where in the pack the photo finished as a guage to it's success.

All my opinion of course. :)

It's a little too demanding to appeal to many here, Villy. Voters take 2-3 seconds to vote on an image, and for most even that tests their attention span.

Sadly, faidoi is absolutely right.

Because this is DPC and you were supposed to take pictures of a sharp clean sunset.

Nothing creative or orijinal is allowed here. Sorry.

I think that there is room for everybody

I don't think it's about "wearing a uniform". The 154 photos ahead of it were either more visually appealing, more compelling subjects, more creative, and/or had more interesting "from the ground up" perspectives. The opposite is true about the ones that finished behind it. This one looks like a typical 'middle of the pack' entry -- pretty well done technically, but nothing 'wow' or uniquely attractive about it. The sky is decent but not great. The barrel thing is a bit ugly. And all the scraps on the ground distract from the smooth, peaceful look it could've had. But there's nothing terribly bad about it either. It finished right where I would've expected.

This photo is not really taken from the perspective of the ground up, is it?

I'd say it's from the ground and barely up, but almost horizontal. Nice picture, though!

No no no please don't do that!

It's an amazing shot and it definetly deserved a higher score. I think people might have bumped the score in the right direction if they knew that the drum/ blue thing in the foreground was small (~1 ft high), as it would then fit the challenge interpretation where people took shots fro a very low angle. It could have been remedied by using a forgground object thats size is more readily recognisable. Just my 2C.

A beautiful shot, underappreciated because of challenge title.

Of the 9 images currently on Ribbon row only one has a sunset. Plenty of originals out there...go ahead and take a peek! ;^)

To say 'plenty lot of originals out there' is a slight exaggeration. DPCer's sure like the magazine look. Unfortunately, this 'look' most often lacks originality.
