My first challenge submission, so hopefully it gets better for me than my current stats.

As for picking complimentary colours, I know there has been a lot of chat about the colour wheel, but the challenge didn't say to use this, it didn't even say it must be two colours (it said try to use two colours), I think colours can be complimentary (and I'm including black and white in here, I know they are shades but that’s my view) that aren't per the wheel.

Good luck all

Yah, i 3rd that. I don't even think black&white are complementary colors.. infact black&white aren't even colours.

Let's see what will happen

I have been trying not to add to this thread, but I just couldn't restrain myself any longer. There are way too many entries that do not have even remotely contrasting colours!
It is as though the challenge description was: Try to use 2 complementary colours, but if you can't just post any pretty picture!
I expected to see a lot of Red and Green, because they are the only primary colours that are also complementary - a very strong combination.
And NO - black is NOT a colour and white is NOT a colour!!!
Now that I got that off my chest, good luck to all the real entries!

going up slowly. I hope I do better than my last entry ( beverages)
Haven't started voting yet, not sure how I will vote shots that don't have two complementary colours?? Don't want to give a good photo a bad score but I think the challenge description is important. What to do, what to do?

I don´t get this score at all. The image is sharp, in focus, well exposed and on topic, especially if you look at the chart rikki11 posted earlier. I hardly expected to ribbon with the image, thought it might get a 5.8-6.2 perhaps but this score kindof bums me out a little bit and worse is that of the 31 people that have woted so far, none of them left a comment to give me a clue as to why they gave a relatively low score... Sorry for the rant, just needet to vent a little bit, I think I just have to start thinking about my next entry... :o)

I'm in the same boat, but it should come up a bit in the next few days. Expect a drop in a few hours as America awakens to a new day!

As I'm scoring, I'm looking first for complementary colors, and it has become very clear to me that many people don't understand what they are! Without the complementary colors, don't expect a good score from me. It's a shame too, because there are several very nice images, but they just don't fall into the challenge definition!
Second, if I find an image that has complentary colors in it, I then am grading on interest, and overall photographic techniques.

Good Luck All!

Hoping it doesn't change to much over the next few days, well unless it is a change for the better. Good luck everyone.

*poop*, I jinxed myself, it's going the wrong way now.

True when considering pigments but certainly not true when talking of light.
There are 3 primary colours of light which are complementary to the three secondary colours Red / cyan; Green / magenta; Blue / yellow.
All I ask is that people should open their minds.

I really considered a Broncos (Blue/Orange) theme type of picture. Then I figured all them Steeler fans would vote me down.

BTW, my score is rising: 5.885 (or something like that)

I haven't finished voting, but there are soooooo many that have no idea of complementry colors. High school art folks, or something. Lots of 1s from me this time. But I have a low score, so I guess my colors don't meet others this time either. Fun huh.

And I am sure your leaving comments for all those ones! After identifying yourself as a 1 giver, you may find a few people interested in your comments!

As for the votes, please remember not only red and green are complimentary. If in doubt consult a color wheel. If many people got complimentary colors wrong when they took their photographs, then they will more than likely get it wrong when they vote on complimentary photographs.
