Sorry for the screaming tipe of title, but I'm a bit panic!

Let me do some briefing:

Two weeks ago I was contacted from a local newspaper guy that wanted some photos from the political campaign opening dinner from a specific campaign. We agreed that he would pay me in publicity in his newspaper. After we had agreed on it he called me again telling me that the organization had a photgrapher but if I want I could also go, but more relaxed to enjoy the dinner. And I went and took a bunch of photos. I gave him a cd with a proof slideshow. He came back to me and said I was the only one with decent photos from it and he wanted some after all.

I then realize that he was part of the canpaign and he suggeste that the photos could also be used for other purposes such as political campaign and advertisings. So I gave him the photos he choosed and along with them a declaration saying that he could only use the photos on his newspaper and that firthr usage of the images would only be possible with my written permission.

He called me last weekend to see if I wanted to shoot other political event with a nationa figure and there I was.

He wants to meet me today (I have 1 1/2 hour to be precise) because they want to send the images to another publication but they must have talked about the rights declaration and the publication refused to publicate the images withought my permission. So they want the images to use in the campaign and to distribute.

My big question is............... How much should I charge? And how?
Per image? Per working day? Per hour?

And will I mantain the rights of the images to my own? Should I sell them? Or should I do something like the "some rights reserved" contract/declaration, meaning that they can use it and difuse it regarding it isn't used for comercial purpose? But if they don't sell it but they do a advertisement for their campaign, can it be considered a comercial usage of it, and in that case they have to pay to use it for that pourpose?

A milion tanks to any one that can bring some light in to the subject.

I'm not a paid photographer, but I would venture to say holding on to the rights of political related photos, which are for the most part important and valued during the campaign time, and useless afterwords (except if they make significant history) I'd come up with a rate to just sell the photos, and leave the rights to the photos to them.

I am not a pro so this is just my opionion -> If it were me I would sell the rights (non-exclusive if possible) to use for this specific use only; maybe this campain or publication or something that makes sense. Unless you believe in the issue e.t.c. then don't give away the rights to the photos.

granted, there are a lot of variables involved, so take this with a grain of salt. in richmond (a state capitol), an 8x10 b&w reprint for personal use is $25. commercial use of the image is $250. i'm not exactly sure, but i'm under the impression political/campaign use is $400-500--and that is PER IMAGE! paid UPFRONT. source is always credited. your mileage may vary, depending on local and nature of the campaign.

bottom line: campaigns ALWAYS need high quality images, and are notorious about not wanting to pay for them. good luck!

Tanks for the feedback.

Thore are big fees that you are talking about skipro. I'll let them do the talk first.

My father works for a company of restauration, as a consultant, developer of new products and qualaty control. He's been doing some studio photos for the menus and publicity in a city studio. They charge 250 euros per photo that the client use. So the fees are about right with the ones you said.

But for this kind of job I'm not shure how to do it. I've got the photos and their interest in them.

If any of you where hired to shoot a polotical campaign for a day how did you charge for it?

for political campain, I'd charge $10 for every 1000 copies printed of each image, so if you have 10 images they want to use, and print each in 50.000 copies that would give you $5000.

to get paid by the numbers of prints is the fairest way to charge, $10 for one image isn't much, but if they print nationwide, 20.000.000 copies, then that would pay $20.000 for one image..

then you could give some discount if the number of prints exceeds 10.000 :)
