Suggestion: Give out awards for winning challenges. I know that you most likely don't have the resources to give out monitary prizes, but I have a couple suggestions that are 'cheap'.
Give out memberships (especially for non-members), give away trial memberships such as:
1st place - 3 months
2nd place - 2 months
3rd place - 1 month

Or, allow the winners to get a free 8x10 print of the winning photo from dpcprints.

Just a thought.

Why would they do that? To lose money?

it would be nice to get something. I would love to get a free print of any picture I wanted. That would be nice.

We have plenty enough problems with people breaking the rules and questioning the voting practices of others when it's only a virtual ribbon at stake. Put something of actual value at stake, and those problems will increase by orders of magnitude.

Awarding prizes of value places additional legal responsibilities and liabilities on the site owners, and would require considerable legal work involving state agencies as well as revision of the site TOS.

The "challenge" in DPChallenge is to the photographer, to capture/interpret the assigned topic. This is not DPCompetition.com, and that's what makes it an educational community rather than just a contest. I believe that without the argument "it's only a virtual ribbon" available, that sense of community and cooperation will degrade significantly.

GeneralIE...I would have to disagree about this site not be a competition. It is competition when you award prizes virtual or not. I believe sometimes its a popularity contest. I like this site, sometimes, other times...I have to wonder. I do believe that I have grown with my photography. Maybe someday, real prizes can be given out.

That's my point -- if you have cheating and grousing about how people vote now, how much worse will it be with anything of actual value at stake. Right now, it's a "friendly" competition. I have strong doubts it would remain as friendly with prizes. Besides, as I mentioned, it's a big, expensive, legal hassle to offer prizes.

There are other threads on this subject -- perhaps reading some of the past debate would be of value.

It's pretty good as it is. A friendly little competition, with the hope of assisting photographers learn how to photograph and create. The 'create' part struggles here often, but even with that, it's a great site to participate in and to observe.......(how is that for friendly!)

I agree ... the challenges are good as is. Lots of opportunity to learn for those that want to take the opportunity. Good challenges to grow as photogs.

Offering prizes might really make the supposed voting conspiracies a real problem. As is with no real proze, anyone who actually participates in any methhod of padding their votes really only cheats themselves (as they don't really get a true representation of ther talents). For the rest of us, we can continue to learn and grow in a constructive environment.

The purpose of the site is "Participating" in the Challenges. To start awarding material prizes changes the whole dynamics of this site as it exists now - it will change it from a friendly competition to a extremely competitive competition.

The question to all whom are of the opinion that awarding material prizes is a good idea:

Will that really make you better skilled or improve your skill with the camera?

The 'spirit' of these challenges is to 'challenge' yourself so that you can grow in your skills and improve.

Personally, in my opinion, I don't care for the idea - the challenge and exploring different avenues (there are many different forms of photography/art) is enough for me.

Just another thought ... there are Prize sites out there if you need the heavy competition and reward. One I belong to awards prizes for best in category each month as well as each quarter. I don't find that it inspires and challenges me to grow. JMO.

stop the presses!!
I agree with azoychka!!

The reason people in this community help others photographically (at least imho) is in some way because there is nothing to lose, so to say, by letting others know thier tricks of the trade.

Also, those membership payments & % from the prints are what pay for the site to run, why would they want to be giving away the items they use to fund the site. Also who would pay the photog for the print. D&L can't just print and give another photogs image away because someone else wants it, they would have to pay the % that goes to the photographer.

I think it is pretty safe to say D&L are not rolling around in a vault of cash monday to friday. They sure could be, if they wanted to take the community and free aspect from the site, but they have graciously made it available and enjoyable for all. A wonderful communal gathering for photogs. And that, my friends, IS the reward.

edit - i need to stay off the boards my english is attrocious! Lets not even try to correct the spelling!

I think it would be nice to win something....but I can see where GeneralE is coming from. It would just complicate things even more, plus you already get to have your picture placed on the front page for a week, which is basically like winning free advertisement.

I, just like everyone else here would love to win a print, whether it's of my own photo or one of my choice. But, this isn't why I am here. I am here to learn. The issue in this thread wouldn't even effect me for quite some time because I have a long ways to go before I could even have a chance at winning a challenge. But, if you are that good that you think you will win, and you need a physical incentive to even try, perhaps this isn't the place for you. Perhaps you should try entering in professional challenges where the prizes are thousand of dollars. I am here to learn and wether there is a ribbon at stake or money or a free membership, that makes no difference in how I hard I am going to work toward the cahllenge.
