Just curious. I have been shooting digital for about three years now and I just bought a D70s. Have never had this happen before. So far, from what I have heard it happens once in a while. Like once every 1000-5000 pictures.

John....... strange effect. Is this made in jpeg or raw? And also what software? I mention software because I have had distortion even more dramatic than this in a certian raw converter and I narrowed the problem to the software simply by trying another editor.

Used to have it happen sometimes in my HP 320. A LOT more frequently though. Prbably like once in every 100-200 shots. Havn't seen in on my Kodak...yet! Have over 2500 shots on it.

Andre,

This was right off the Card. The camera wrote this file this way.
I am wondering if it is my Cam or my 4 year old Memory Card. It is one of the Cards mentioned in the manual for compatability.

The fix on this photo was easy. I just do not want to do a shoot and have a whole card like this.

I think it's time to call the Men in Black

Which brand is the card?

I've had that a few times on raw files on a number of cards. I'd be interested to know why, too.

To hijack this thread slightly, may I ask what the [r-numbers] are? There's no mention of them in the manual.

I used to get a similar effect on with my FujiFilm 6900. The line was horizonal it looked like the bottom of the pic was chopped off and placed at the top. The problem in my case was a bad area on my memory card. (SmartMedia) I would get several in a row if I wasn't watching the LCD. If I reformatted the card, the pictures would be fine for a while, but it was a recurring problem until I replaced the card.

It's a longshot, but I had this problem frequently with (2) canon powershots (S50 and Pro1) with many different CF cards and it would do it direct connect or card reader.

Are you running an AMD on an (older) nVidia nForce Mobo?

Mine happened with my ASUS nForce2, My problem went away as soon as I got the drivers right for the IDE Controller. Haven't had it happen since...I'm on an nForce4 now and haven't had any problems.

Like I said it is a longshot...but after troubleshooting for a while I suspected that the disk would burp during a transfer and cause the split. Always happened to only 1 pic out of 300 (100 pic increments when dragging and dropping from CF)...

I do know that I have not experienced it for about a year now.

ED: Any Camera any card all are good...24K on my 20D with LEXAR/PQI/Sandisk CF not a one split.

Must be something wrong with your subject... he doesn't look... right.

A horizontal line would explain defects in the card or in how the file was written to or read from the card.

A verticle line is baffling.

Verrrrry strange, indeed.

Does the D70 flip the image in camera? I'm assuming no...but I can't imagine how a verticle line showed up. :)

You might be onto something there - I heard somewhere that pressure can build up in a child's tectonic plates, causing the face to shift.

If you watch TLC and Discovery enough you learn important things like this.
