Now flip the spine back up straight like you had in the version before this, use the spine with letters in it spelling out the name of biz on a clean white card.

you mean like a combination of this one, and the previous one?
Sure! great idea :-)

Okay. How's this? I stayed with just two colors (for now) and had to change the circle shape a little for the words to fit. Is this along the lines you were thinking?

turn the letters to white. Looks good.

generally when i design a logo, there are two parts. The "mark" and the text treatment of the name - sometimes one crosses into the other.

I spend most of my time working on the mark - this eventually, with lots of money and branding, will stand on its own and represent the entire company - infused with the messages that have been connected with the logo mark over the years - the Nike swoosh is this on steriods.

Other logos are simply a typeface - Dawn dish soap, Zest, sorry for sticking in the soap world, it's been a long day, ah, IBM is a face too, Microsoft has been from time to time,

Once I have the mark designed, I go through and select typefaces I think represent the character of the company, run several I like (no more than three typefaces with tiny variations on the mark) and hopefully the client will choose a combination of those - most of the time it takes another round of variations and typefaces before they decide.

So the basic look is this - variations on this theme vary widely as the creative process wends its way. What I learned in design school is that the mark should be able to stand on its own, and the name too - at least as a starting place -

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/31403/thumb/240079.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/31403/thumb/240079.jpg', '/') + 1) . ' Here's kind of where I start - I usually spend a day or so just doodling in Illustrator with various elements (although I don't think I'd use a spine for a chiroproctor - too easy as an entire element, but maybe the shapes of one or two of the vertebrae could become something) to get some ideas on the mark. Another day of variations and further simplification on the mark, then half a day or so on type faces to show three ideas to the client.

Then, once the client has shot those all to hell, start over with their additional input to hopefully create something they like quicker and more on target. Of course it varies, but you get the idea.

I admire you all for chipping in and helping Kiro out. The least I've done a logo for is $1,500 - it's like giving him a 20D with lenses! Good for you - isn't community great?

I hope this "up past my bedtime" ramble has been helpful in some way.

Edit: In no way is the logo I've included to be construed as a design for your business Kiro - simply an illustration of the separate "mark" and text treatment.

Likr the above poster mentioned, I'm moving you toward an identifiable mark that can stand alone from the text.

From Roberts suggestions:

Sample Logo incorporated in Business Card so you can get a feel for how it will look:
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/41845/thumb/240110.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/41845/thumb/240110.jpg', '/') + 1) . ' ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/41845/thumb/240109.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/41845/thumb/240109.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

Andrew - not entering this for your contest if you like this it's all yours, I would be happy to send you the vector file associated with the design.

You have gotten some fantastic responses to your request. I know how difficult it can be when you're just getting your business off the ground you have to wear virtually every hat - I was just there a year ago:)

Now once you have a strong logo in black and white, you can start on color treatments for it. Start with one color.

Okay, really. What kind of color treatment were you thinking?

One color, as in the whole being that color. What you'll do is make an 8.5x11 with as many fo those logos that you can fit on that page and make each one a different color. Rikki's green is pretty nice to start the first one with.

Thanks for the plug Mandy!

The color green symbolizes life, nature, fertility, and well being.
It is the color of nature, fertility, life. Grass green is the most restful color and symbolizes self-respect and well being. It is also the color of balance. It also means learning, growth and harmony.

Green is favored by well balanced people. It symbolizes the master healer and the life force. I figured these meanings all fit within Andrew's profession.

As far as the text is concerned, typically you try to stay away from serif fonts as they are distracting and sometimes inappropriate in logo and graphic applications. All of the fonts chosen for this particular logo are san serif fonts - clean, clear, and unobstrusive.

The symbol is a derivative of what Andrew initially posted when he started the thread.

Logos by themselves need to be clean, crsip, and simple yet straight to the point. Logo design should always be imagined as fitting all sorts of different applications such as memo pads, envelopes, business cards, etc. basically, the simpler the logo the better it is.

My favorite graphic is the one Anna did on the third post from the top. It looks clean and profesional.

I deceided to give it a try too. It was fun, having never done anything with graphics before.

...everything that is black should be changed to a color.
