What I entered.

What I should have entered?

I like the entry better Jennifer :) It kinda reminds me of one of my favorite photographers Dax_

I think you made the right choice :) With regards to the OOF comments, it's more so because it has a softer focus and not necessarily OOF.

Yeah, a couple people mentioned Dax in my comments. Kind of embarrassing really.

I don't see soft focus either. I think maybe the light is radiating off the shell a bit...? It looks perfectly fine to me, maybe people are expecting a surf worn shell to have sharp edges, not round smooth ones? LOL, it's just funny because I don't see blur at all! Maybe I'm just fully adjusted to only having a kit lens to work with!

I really prefer the one you did not enter, sorry! :)

I like the one you entered. On my screen the other one looks a bit over-sharpen, but I know that also depends on the resolution of the monitor. The first one is lovely.

They are both very nice images. I like the outtake better. Left comments on both - overall opinion is the outtake is more naturally composed and has better lighting.

Smile and keep having fun! ;^)

What I entered.

This is really interesting. Would it be even more if the shell were raised up off the background? (Glue it onto some type of small pedestal.) Then, maybe some of the light would spill around it defining all the edges better. *If you don't try it, I think I might try doing something like it.

Oh, wow - I'm still wondering about the pedestal thing.

cornettcag - you were the other shell entry! yay!

Yeah, if work with this again, I'll probably figure out how to get it lighter over all, without losing the streaking effect that I wanted. I seem to have a preference for darker photos. But I think it's either a personal taste or maybe an issue of monitor calibrations that they don't seem to be as well-received online. To my eye, these look good, I liked the way the shadows fell, particularly along the pointing narrow part of the shell where some detail disappears and the very tip that just visible. I don't know... I like the way it turned out.

If you try something with the concept, share the results! (I was shining a light through a crystal drinking glass to get the patterns.) :)

Wow can you believe it! My outtake was almost the same as the blue but I changed my mind the day of rollover.

While the debate rages on, would appreciate some feedback as well. Had a difficult time choosing which to enter.

Initially thought this:
null

but entered this instead:

I never really expected it to do well, but I like it. Still I should have known better.

I too wonder if my first choice would have done better than what I was talked into entering by family....what do you think?

Entered: Challenge Entry

Tell me what you all think.

I loved your outtake. The lighting is more appealing to me. Don't feel bad, I've not done the best at choosing which photo to enter. Think I'm taking a challenge break.

OMG your outtake is amazing. You're entry was one of my higher rated though anyway.

Great and interesting photos. The one you submitted, I gave an 8. The outtakes were great too. The pic with the fire showing sparked my interest more than the other two, though.

To me, both pics are great, the challenge entry was softer looking. But the colors really pop in the outtake. Hard to tell if it'd have done better. Good job on both though.
