We used to have an old World Book dictionary which had a section of common words where they had columns for six or eight different languages.

Does anybody here reads Readers Digest? It's a magazine and for their cover photo, they usually use a small, almost thumbnail-like photo. The rest of the cover is used for contents and headlines, with a plain coloured background. How's that for a cover photo?

The best way to judge the magazine cover photo would be to search for the title as per the submitter's photo (the title of submission is the magazine's name anyway) and see if that photo is indeed suitable for the magazine it is being submitted for.

So what you're trying to say here is that it depends on the magazine?

:)

No, I don't think it depends on the magazine at all. I believe it depends on the quality of the image and the content. A good art director will choose the best image for the layout, regardless of either orientation or colour.

Very nicely said Jak. This is how I've been voting for this challenge as well.

There's one aspect not yet covered in this forum. Many pros use medium-format, including 6x6. There's a debate currently over the image quality of medium-format and the top-ranking digitals, with digitals appearing to come out on top slightly. But that's irrelevant here. My point is that there are other formats in current use which blur the portrait/ landscape distinction.

I've heard that although some publications require precise print formats, editors will and do crop to suit their immediate needs. Some medium-format pros even complain about the 35mm's framing requirements, saying that it's often easier to shoot a large frame then crop down later.

Except that how well it can be cropped for the cover and what the magazine's usual style is does figure into this, and how much flexibility occurs in the latter does vary by magazine. That's precisely why they give you specs on artwork as well as on content. "Best image for the layout" can also mean "image that will not require hours of work to cram it into our usual style", after all.

We all whine every week about something that is usually related to a 'different' view of the challenge topic.

If you didn't take a portrait oriented photo and it's not doing well because of that, don't blame someone else.

I totally agree.

When I voted here I thought the same about the landscape images, however I was very careful to note if any of the landscape shots could be cropped later (by a mag company) to produce a good result, if they could I have these a higher mark..
