I am considering upgrading my Nikkor 70-300G lens to a combination of a TC17E converter and a 200mm zoom. My cheap nikkor suffers from lack of sharpness at 300mm, chromatic abberation, and some hue shifts. Also too slow for me at F5.6...

here are two pics I took at the zoo:
at 122mm F4.2:

at 300mm F5.6:

I can see a distinct difference in the sharpness and contrast between the two shots...

I am looking at the 80-200mm F2.8 nikkor, but I am not sure it would work with the teleconverter with autofocus (B&H website under the lens description does not list that teleconverter as being compatable). So what are the alternatives? I don't want to go with the 70-200VR lens, I think $1500 is too much just for the lens. Anyone have experience with the Sigma 70-200 F2.8 EX APO IF/HSM? Or the Tokina 80-200 F2.8 AT-X Pro? Would both of these work with the teleconverter, and be singificantly better then my 70-300? How would they compare with the 80-200 nikkor?

I have just purchased the 80-200f2.8ed and thankfully it arrived today :)
whilst waiting for it I did some very basic research for getting extra reach and found this page refered from nikonlinks:
//www.nikonlinks.com/unklbil/teleconverters.htm
Hope this helps.

I'm also very divided between the Nikon f2.8 80-200mm and the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 EX. Last weekend I was shooting some motorbike freestyle acrobacies and there where another photographer with a Sigma 70-200 f2.8. He said he shoot all kind of stuff with it, gig, sports, action, and he don't plan in changing, ever for the VR version of nikon, because you really need wide apperture not VR in ation under poor light, because you have to stop the motion. I'm planning having this for my chistmas present for miself :)

And he uses a 2x sigma teleconverter that mantains autofocus.

I believe that all three Nikon teleconverters are compatible with the Nikon 80-200 2.8. I know they are with the 70-200 2.8 VR that I have. And for what it is worth for action shots you do not need VR. VR only stops shake not subject motion.

acording to the teleconverters link that tonyg provided its not. The 70-200 VR is an internal focusing lens, and I belive the 80-200 is not. I think it might be a factor here... Does someone have the two of them? does the TC17E works with the F2.8 80-200?

Whoops. My mistake. Got this off of the B&H site:

Usable Nikon Teleconverter TC-14b (manual focus only)
TC-201 or TC-14a (manual focus only & occasional vignetting may occur)

The 70-200 2.8 VR works with all the teleconverters and maintains full auto and VR. Sorry for the bad info earlier.

Right... thats what I read there too. So how about it, any one using the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 EX or the Tokina 80-200 F2.8 AT-X Pro?

Hello, the sigma is not a bad choice but I have used the Tokina too and I thought it was lacking in many things including the sharpness you so desire, also it was very slow, AF was wondering, I found the Sigma to be a bit faster and a lot clearer. If money is not an issue then I would suggest going for the Nikkor 80-200 f2.8 because it has been one of the best lenses nikkor make for a long time, you could grab yourself a decent AF-S 80-200 from a good used retailer for a fair price and never regret it, you can use this lens with an adaptor. I have had other problems with non-brand makers and tend to stick with Nikkor these days, having said that though, both Tamron and Sigma are making good alternatives for Nikon and Canon alike. Im still not convinced about Tokina yet.
