so, anyone who reads the forum might have seen the thread where i said i was going to shoot for this challenge using a $200 Canon Powershot A10, which is a 1.3 mpx camera. Primarily to test that whole 'it's not the camera, it's the photographer' hypothesis that people are always floating out there : ) ....

so i just did a few test shots around my office this AM, tweaked them very minimally (just slight levels adjust and a couple desaturations). none of these are my entry for the challenge. these are just quick and dirty, not the MOST exciting pics in the universe, but should give you an idea of what you can do with a 'low end' camera, and the quality you can expect . .

fun with 1.3 megapixels

The A10 is a great little camera, limited in it's controls (exposure comp and wb, that's it), but as long as you stay within what it does well it does a good job, doesn't look cheap at all ; ) ...

comments? discussion? :-D

Wow! those are some really good pictures. I noticed that they are all close ups. What do the pictures look like from a distance?

good question and depends on what you shoot. i tend to like closeups in my photography. im a firm believer in filling the frame and cutting down on extraneuous visual clutter to make a strong picture.

but here, let me shoot something far-ish and post it. just a sec : )

Every challenge that I have entered has been with photos taken with my fuji finepix 1400. Since the camera is so limited it makes me work harder and I get a much better feeling of accomplishment. I feel that I have been getting better. Lord knows that the camera hasn't changed.

Mag, those are beautiful... but from looking up the specs of that camera it has 3x optical zoom! That's not the same kind of low end equipment a lot of us have to deal with :).
11/15/2002 12:11:06 PM · #8
yeah, it's a wonderful bargain camera .. i think anyone using a lesser camera than this is in the tiny minority : ) ..

and for someone upgrading, this shows you dont have to break the bank to get something that works ok.

Out the window 1 - Some technology (cars, etc)...hmmm, 3 cuz it's visually unapealing.

Out the window 2 - No tech visible, sorry but 1 since it doesn't meet the challenge.

Just kidding ;>) Nice shots with ONLY 1.3 megapixels. This ought to be fun. You're gonna kick my Aiptek's butt if I'm not careful.

it wasnt my desire to kick anyone's butt, although i wont mind if i do. : )

it wasnt my desire to go stone-age, either : ) ..

all i wanted to do was prove the point that perfectly wonderful shots can be taken with an entry level camera (that's from last year no less) and that you dont need a $500+ cam to be competitive.

people make a lot of features and pixel count, but all the features/pixels in the world won't help you if you a) dont know how to use them and b) you're not seeing things worth shooting in the first place : ) ..

Mag, You're right of course. I just thought it might provide some "entertainment" value to rib each other about "My 1.3 megapixel can beat up your 1.3 megapixel". I hang with a competitive crowd so the trash talk comes easy. Never meant seriously but is good for a lot of laughs. . .
Still, it would be nice to place well with a 1.3 :>)
11/15/2002 03:08:38 PM · #15
DEFINITELY : ) I'm all for it. .

I just wanted to be clear for the site where i was coming from and not just make it about a "stone-age brawl, lol" ...

So, with that said, you're Aiptek's going DOWN, Seeker ; ) ...

My 1Mp is going to wipe the floor with your uppity 1.3Mps. What do you
think you need all that for ? Cropping !?

Ask and ye shall receive is it?

Oops, forgot about Gord and his wannabe camera. This ought to be good. Gord has the "low end" camera, I've got the mid range and Mag has the "high end". Gord, this means if he beats us it cuz of his "better equipment". This'll be great if I can smoke Mag's shot but it will be a bummer if the .9 takes us. I gotta admit, it sure makes you pay a WHOLE lot more attention to your composition etc when you don't have that much data to throw away.

"Uppity 1.3Mps" my foot, you're just jealous. . .

Shhhhh!!! I've got my wife convinced that I absolutely NEED the Sony F717... If she reads this thread I will NOT be a happy puppy :)

Myqyl, Just show her my Lady in Red shot and tell her I'd never have been able to do that without the 30 second shutter ability of my 707. You can't do that with a many of the cameras. You need to be able to control your shutter.

Or would my LIR shot be another point against the 717? ;>p

These pictures turned out better then I expected. It does take a good picture. My son has been wanting to buy a camera with 2.o and I might just let him now. I still think he should save for a better one.

What is up with that parking lot? How in the world are some of those folks going to get out? lol

does she read the forums on dpchallenge? : )

truly, an f717 is a much more capable camera. and i'm not positing that this cheap camera could ever replace it. certainly you could never do super macros or fast action or long exposure photography with the $200 A-10.

but as a platform on which to learn basic composition, framing and lighting, and enter a shot or 2 in a contest, a lesser camera, if wisely chosen, can, i believe, certainly be worthy :)

hmmm...maybe I should pull out my palm pix....no one could get more basic than that one.
Here's a pic I took a couple of years ago.
No resizing necessary the highest resolution is 640x480.

Just to chip in my two cents, about 4 months ago when I was considering getting into digital photography I dragged out the family's .7 megapixel model that was top notch in '98 to see if I had any capabilities at all. I managed to get this portrait of my little brother with it.
Luckily now I'm a high roller with my 2 mp coolpix 2500, which is responsible for all my entries here. It's nice now that I don't have to worry about the limitations of less than top of the line technology anymore. = )

Doesn't anyone have one of those wristwatches with the spy camera in it? (I mean, someone who can REVEAL that they have it.)
