Are you blonde? (Not that it has anything to do with it, but I'm sure it would probably increase the ribbing you'll receive...) Being blonde myself, I've pulled some real boners too - although I must admit this one is pretty good!

In all seriousness, I'm very sorry for you. I hope it turns out okay and that at least something is salvageable. Maybe, it is a good excuse to go out and buy new equipment!? :-) (weak attempt at humor, but coming from someone with a Gateway, I know I'd welcome any excuse!)

Hang in there!

yipe! i did that with a milkshake once.

with my window rolled down.

i've done the same thing with a lens cap, even a camera case, yet to do it with an actual camera (yet).

Oy geez! So sorry, Deannda! I hope the camera makes a full recovery!

My wife did that with a latte' once. We drove out of Starbucks parking lot and a couple blocks down the road before she realized it. I carefully slowed down and she recovered the latte'. Not a drop had spilled.

We can laugh about it now, but it was really tense for a few moments there. ;P

Could be worse. Be thankful it wasn't a DSLR. That would be ugly. Live and learn.

It's probably a bad idea to put a battery in while it's still drying out. Wait until it's completely dry before putting in the battery. Impure water acts as a conductor and you may cause a short across a vital silicon product that would damage your camera permenantly. If I were you I would have opened it up. Your mileage my vary on depending on your technical prowess and confidence as to what opening it up means (I don't recommend this for everyone as it is easy enough to take apart, it's hard to remember how to put back together). Let it sit somewhere warm, out of the path of direct heat. The idea is to find someplace with a low humidity level without melting the camera with excessive heat. Silica probably won't help you here. And let it sit for a long time. Maybe a week, in some parts of the world, and then insert the battery see how it is.

Electronic components are pretty resiliant to water. It's the motors rusting up, the lens and sensor getting watermarks that I would be concerned about. Also the impact onto pavement is a big owie.

My brother lost his Canon G5 doing exactly that, but then he had the perfect excuse to buy a 10D. :)

I once lost a brand new fishing pole and reel this exact same way. I don't ever put stuff up on top of my vehicle anymore. I bet you won't either, heh.

Sorry for your loss!

it would have been worce for me i only have a bike....imagen how fast that would've been stolen...or just fallen over with the wait of a 12lb. camera and bag on the seat....

I bet you never do that again at least. Upgrade time :)
09/26/2005 06:31:57 PM · #37
Many people have advised you to use this as an excuse to upgrade and I might've done the same thing, but I am reminded of several past conversations with my kids that go something like this:
"Dad, I need one of those new Walkmans with the cool features." (insert video game, iPod, etc)
"What happened to the one I bought you a month ago?"
"I left it outside and it got stepped on and rained on."

I think you can guess what the answer is.

So, NO NEW CAMERA until you learn to take care of the old one.
...unless the insurance will pay for it. ;-)

This isn't a camera story...but a very stupid one. Parked my red car a few cars down from my husbands car on a busy road. Went into a shop together. Half hour later say goodbye and head towards red car about three cars away from husbands. Click unlock, pull handle, door opens, get in , put key in ignition, doesn't fit, look around, horror and realization, WRONG CAR !, try to get out quickly, almost bash real owner with opening door, almost attacked, apologise profusely, run away....never to be mentioned in public.
(p.s. I didn't unlock her car...it was coincidental that she unlocked the same time I tried)

That IS hilarious! Sounds just like something that happened to my wife - she was coming out of the store and heading back to her car when she saw a strange woman in the drivers seat. As she approached, the crazy woman swung the door open and almost knocked her down. My wife said the woman apologized then ran off. ...hey! Wait a minute! ...

Oh boy I had my camera here with me reading your story and like a shot I had to reach for the lens hood or else the poor camera would've been traumatized for the rest of its life snapping nightmares every night.

Please, give proper warnings beforehand. ;-)

Thanks for the comforting words and the ability to make me smile about this. I would like to think this is a sign to upgrade but this camera was my upgrade and I wasn't even done upgrading it (slave flash was to be added later).

It's funny, I've hardly picked up my camera in the last couple of months except for auction pictures yet now that I can't use it I WANT TO SO MUCH!!! :(

Oh well, live and learn, live and learn and hope that sucker dries out.

Sorry to scare the other cameras out there, hehehe

Ha! I can do you one better. When I was about 9 Dad was driving my brother and me to school on a snowy morning. He bundled John and I into the car, backed out of the driveway and started up the street. The street was snow covered, so we were going pretty slowly.

About half way up, John heard this pitiful meowing sound. He alerted Dad, who thankfully stopped. On top of the car was Strife, one of our cats.

Needless to say, John and I were late to school. But come on! How can you miss a cat on top of the car??? Then again, this is the same cat who once fell off the roof (two stories) into a 6 foot snow drift. She just had a thing for snow.

:)

Hope the camera survives the event!

When I got married 15 years ago, of course we were college students (read - BROKE) and I let my best friend's boyfriend, a photog major, be the photographer. He took 10 rolls of pictures, from me getting ready until we left the reception, and was so pleased with what he had he couldn't wait to get to the lab to develop them. Unfortunately, he put his two bags on top of the car to help his girlfriend (my maid of honor) get her stuff in the car, and drove off with the bags on top of the car...never to be seen again. I guess it really doesn't matter that much now, but I really wasn't a happy camper...and neither was he. :(

Put it up for sale on eBay with this story - I bet somebody will buy it just for the rights to tell the story!

I feel for you...but it is an hilarious story!

Did the same thing years ago...except I had a YELLOW car and parked it on the road....left and came back to get in the car but was able to open the car door but not start it and I couldn't figure it out...and started looking around and noticed it wasn't mine. Hopped out quick hoping the owner didn't see me (they didn't as far as I know) and my car was 2 cars over. I wouldn't have thought there would have been an exact car like mine in yellow...LOL

If it ever starts working again, I say that you get in touch with Olympus and sell them your story :) - what a good advertisement!
09/26/2005 09:51:11 PM · #47
Well, I now know my camera much more intimately than I ever thought I would. I took off the back and the inside board and that is as far as I dared. The only thing I worry about now is inside the lens, it's all fogged up but with the back off maybe it has a better chance of drying out.

IF my camera survives this you can bet I'll be contacting Olympus with this story!

Deannda
Hopefully it will be just like a Timex, take a likin' and keep on tickin'

My 7 year old did that with his GLASSES!! My husband drove off, and they were never seen again.

Well, here's the update.

Sat open all night long in a cool but dry place with a slight breeze. Condesation was gone from lense area, didn't look like any spots left behind.

Put it all back together, popped in a fresh battery and it turned on!

But that's about it. It turns on but won't turn off, won't shoot, won't do anything :( Just turns on, I can look at the monitor on the back, everything reads but when you try to zoom or click for a picture, nothing. And it won't turn back off when you use the switch. *sigh*

Going to leave it for another 24 hours and see what happens but I have a feeling it won't do any good. Have a feeling the board is fried for all the controls. :(

Deannda
Totally bummed

Just got off the phone with Olympus, the camera was less than a year old but they agreed I would really be pushing the warrenty on this one, LOL! Got the guy to laugh and told him he would have story to tell during break!

$144 to fix my unit. I don't think so. They have a trade-in/trade-up program but all the cameras they offer on that program don't have the hot shoe for the external flash, I want that hot shoe ;(

So now to get the Fuji working again, it was acting up last time we tried using it because I have a client that want's pictures of her little girl for the Fall season. *sigh*

Deannda
Either that or find the money for a new one
