This is my first entry and I'm not sure if this is the place to write comments, but here goes. First of all, many thanks to those of you who have commented on my salt photo. I appreciate it greatly and although some people might not be happy with a rating of 5, for my first entry, I would say that is a pretty good start - of course I would be happier with a higher number too! LOL!

Just a comment about DOF though. This photo was of normal table salt, a subject that is not even 1mm in width at times. If anyone has used the MP65 lens, you will know that dof is extremely minimal to say the least, especially with an object that is not flat. I don't have any fancy macro ring lights or anything like that. Yes, I guess it could have used more focus, but I'm not sure that would have been possible without the special flash. Just my 2 cents toward the dof issue.

Hang on, is this for the current (macro) challenge?? If so the voting hasn't finished yet, and the general etiquette of the site is to not talk about our current photos.. Not sure I have got to voting your one yet...

Regards, marksimms

As a general point though ( and as someone who's also had comments about lack of Depth of Field on my entry) there are two things to realise.

1/ not everyone may realise the severe DoF restraints on higher magnification lenses. Most digicams don't have much of a macro mode and
hence still have quite a bit of DoF to play with.

2/ Technical considerations aside, someone commenting that they would like more DoF means just that. It doesn't mean that they care if it is technically possible or not. It just means that more DoF would be preferable for that person to enjoy your picture more. If it wasn't possible in your shot your are a few of things you can do:

a/ blow off the comment as ignorant and uninformed and assume you know better
b/ consider how you could have taken a similar shot with better focal depth, by changing the subject plane so it is parallel to the lens
c/ accept the comment as wanting more DoF but also realise that you wanted the shallow DoF that you had in the image you submitted.

Something to think about. Just because it isn't possible, doesn't mean
it wouldn't enhance the final picture and might mean that something should have been changed. Or it could be exactly what you wanted. Choice and deliberate results always help.

Gordon,

Thanks for your email (and the other person's too - I didn't know I wasn't supposed to write anything about the photo).

Yes, you make some good points. I would have loved to have more dof, but as I took the photo it wasn't possible. Perhaps if you had better lighting.

I will not to take it personally. There have been many lovely comments too. I just wanted to explain, but perhaps I did that too soon.

Thank you again,
From a newbie,
Diane

I did the same thing .. comment on my pic mefore voting ended .. i got a whole bunch more anal people going off on one saying don't talk about it .. blah blah blah etiquette ....

maybe it sould be written somewhere obvious if it's such a big deal ..

oh and depth of field on macro shots ... not always necessary .. i find the close up shots more degrading to a macro challenge .. although have been generous on marking those.
I think it looks like some people have had fun with this challenge which is good .. it makes it fun to vote.

Oh and there are some dumbasses out there who have in several challenges asked me what my subject matter was .. and indeed in this one ... i think i am the same as most people .. the TITLE gives it away on the most part .. try reading as well as looking at the pics, sometimes a title will alter your perception of an image and can even make an image through humour or thought of some sort.

Hi Firstdutchess.

Welcome to the gang. A D60! I'm jealous. Good luck in the challenge.

Thanks Jacko! I have been watching for a few weeks, but this was the first time I felt confident enough to enter. I think I'm doing not too badly. Yes, I like my D60 although the slow AF gets to me at times. I just got this whole outfit in Mid-August so havne't had much time to get used to it all.
