OK, remember this picture?

I just wanted to say, for the record, that the little hobo is listening to the rail to see if a train is coming before he crosses the bridge in the background.

He is not, I repeat, NOT trying to kill himself!

Whew, I've never had a picture so misinterpreted, although I can see it now. Caden can have a sorta "wistful" look when he's concentrating.

I'm still pretty stoked about the 20th place finish (highest ever), but bearing some of those comments for the week was hard.

No one here ever listened for a train before? I sure did when I was a kid, and was intelligent enough to remove myself from the tracks when a train approached, as I'm sure you and your son would have too. Makes you wonder what people are thinking, huh? I thought this was an awesome photo.

I'm not an expert but I actually like the rather bizarre (not creepy) perspective of your Perspective II. Your son's expression gives an interesting twist even if unintentional. Coming out in 20th place is great!!! I'm pretty thrilled with my humble 218th place - actually 'coz it surpass 5 with over 52% votes, and it's only my second challenge. :)

Just a question. I didn't vote in this challenge because I think it's a conflict of interest to vote in a challenge that I've entered. But I notice that it is allowed. Just wondering if my thinking is misplaced. I'm one of those dreaded "newbies" ...

IMHO, peer review is one of the best learning tools. Who better to provide useful feedback than others making the same endeavor, especially when some have much more experience or knowledge in a given area or subtopic?

Please vote - even in the same challenge you enter. This way we all benefit.

I rated this one very high! Looking at some of your comments you received ... I think some people really need to lighten up. Boys will be boys!

Yes yes that it, let your son play around a railroad track. Give me a break. I would have given it a 9 or 10 if I was around to vote or had entered. I can't believe some of the comments you recieved. Oh no here comes a train. lol Yes I know that kids can get seriously hurt playing around train tracks but did they think this was a Joey Lawrence or something twisted??? (j/k Joey)

this image is one of my few 9 on the perspective contest...so...
edit: even if my comment was (because of the lack of time): "oh man! don't stay there !!!"... well...

I can't believe people would have an issue with that. Must be city-folk.

Hah! I don't know about that one, I'm always playing chicken with the trains. :-)

Don't worry. Its something like standing in the grocery store checkout line telling your child that they may not have candy. The child may be fine with it but some other adult thinks that you are nuts.

Around here they take people on the tracks pretty seriously. It's trespassing and illegal. 3 people in the last 2 years have been hit by trains, 2 killed... The lucky one just had both his legs broken, and was charged criminally ontop of that if I remember it correctly.

On the other side, I don't see anything wrong with the photo, and it certainly doesn't look like a suicide attempt!

Good point but it is up to the individual to determine his/her own safety here.

Heh I sad bad habit to teach a kid and rated you a 6 or 7. I really like the shot and pose. And yes its a bad habit, usually better to teach kids to avoid tracks, not to mention try that on a subway track or some other electrical rail...zap. Any rate you placed alot better than I did and I think well deserved.

Well, you guys do have a point. It was illegal. There were no trespassing signs posted. Interestingly though, there was a well established path from a neighborhood right across the tracks.

I felt comfortable going out while keeping a wary eye (even by myself). One way (the way you see in the picture) you could see quite far and there was a train traffic light (a single red light which would come on when a train was coming). I did feel a bit nervous with Caden out there, but like I said in the comments, he is a really good kid and listened to a T. I wouldn't let either of us venture more than three or four steps onto the bridge (We had to get a bit out there because those ties were wood and looked better than the cement ones) and he never was more than 10 feet away from me.

So anybody who says it's best to just avoid tracks is probably speaking wisely. Those trains did come by much faster than you thought they would. Even 30 or 35 MPH was scary with such weight and power behind them.

Take home message: Stay away from the tracks kids...unless it gets you a 6.3 ;)

Joey, please, don't even joke about it. We have several people killed every year on the tracks. Usually, they're walking along them, listening to their Walkmen. They don't hear the train...

As for the picture, I was startled the first time I looked at it. Then I figured out what was going on. It's been a long time since I've even thought about listening to the rails. Having said that, I thought it was a good picture and rated it highly.

I honestly never understood how so many people get killed by trains while walking along rail tracks.

Trains don't move very fast. They move in an entirely predictable direction and make a WHOLE lot of noise. Train tracks are usually quite straight, so you get quite a bit of time to realize. Oh yeah! The train is coming.

Listening to the rails to hear if a train is coming is typically done as a point of interest or if you are going to cross a bridge or something with not too much room to get out of the way.

I take the train fairly often and in Taiwan, there are some pretty fast, quiet trains, but you can still hear them some distance off.

When people get killed by trains, there's pretty much an unusual factor there.

2 of the 3 were alcohol related. A freshman girl got run over by 3 trains, and a middle aged man also got killed. The other was the headphones deal.

I just went back and looked again, yup indeed a small boy with his ear to the rail to make sure it's ok to cross a narrow train bridge. I can believe some of the comments, they must live very sheltered lives. I can't imaging how it was taken for anything morbid or bad idea. Great work.

Awesome shot! Didn't seem like any danger and I'm sure he had a blast doing it. Spending time with you kid and involving him like that is great.People just need to ease up.

Art causes controversy. The better the art, more so the controversy.

Keep yourself in the headlines. Like Brangelina :-)
