After seeing Pedros video montage I was profoundly inspired to do one of my own. I PM'ed him immediately and he kindly replied back with advice, support and all the info to get me started..software and all.
This is a kind of love letter, to my city (NYC)and to photography which has enabled me to see it with fresh, youthful eyes. I find that I'm looking more deeply, these days into all the cracks, corners and vistas of the city, from its stunning beauty, to it's not so pretty side and it never ceases to amaze me.
Through the lens, a place that I have lived, for 43 years seems completely new.

Photo Story 3 for Windows
Glad you guys like it. I needed to remove the borders but I didn't have any time and I needed to get this out of my system. |

| couldn't get it to play on my mac. i have windows media player. i can hear the song but no images. any ideas? |

I need a Quicktime version for Mac users but John Seltzler who's hosting the video...I might not want to bother again, for a an alt version.
I'm at a loss....sorry. |

Morning bump for my friends in Europe and elseware....
Please look and let me know what you think and if you have experience with PhotoStory 3, are there any suggestion you might have to help improve my skills for my next project.

Interesting stuff - you've captured both a sense of place and a feel for the people there too, but managed to avoid clichés such a cheesy looking-up shot of a skyscraper :o)
My only comment about the montage itself is that it would have been nice to see the full image in all instances (either zooming in from full, or zooming out to full), since I felt a couple of times that there was something off to one side that I was missing.

Manic thank you for the comments. I totally agree that I should have removed the borders to the images that had them but as I was testing the whole project, the ball started to roll fast and get too big when I ran out of time. Then I started to test different file formats, to see if they were even viewable because I too, had trouble opening Pedros at first. It made it tough to go back and redit photo's when I was testing other things at the same time, like timing, fades, starting and ending points etc.

great presentation, Steve! the photos are just wonderful with a sweet and quirky feel which i love. not quite sure how the song connects to the photos but it's absolutely one of my all time fav songs. great work!

Pedro- I did start of with Take A Walk On The Wild Side but didn't have enough gritty "underbelly of the city" type of images to support the length of the song...or even two minutes for that matter.
So(Sher) I went with a more sentimental love song, that relates to seeing New York with loving , fresh eyes, that all came about through photography.

Great job Steve! I love the relatively diverse subjects you include - and as Manic mentions, the fact that it isn't full of cliche shots of the city's landmarks. The panning is often very effective, as you start out with one subject of interest (ie: guy turning around, reflection in a puddle, pig statue, etc) and zoom out to an added interest (street fight, feet by the puddle, woman looking towards the statue) that strengthens the shot and draws more attention than the prior.
Nice street photography :)

i really love this - you have such wonderful photographs! and etta was the perfect backdrop...
i particularly loved the fire escape scene - and the guy with the cats, he's one of my favorite guys to chat with!! he never remembers me though, it's hilarious... i tried to do what he does with my own kitties, but i ended up getting very hurt ;)
you did real good!

Katy-You're lucky that guy doesn't remember your name. He and his girlfriend know mine all to well. They drink beer every so often, on that same set of steps where I took the photo of the guitar/leather/cigarette guy.
When they're toasted they shout my name from across the street...
Steve...Steeeeeeve...HEY STEVE!!! Whassssup Maaaaannnnn! Right on Maaaannnn!
They hang around midtown charging tourists for photo's and then booze it up. I gave him an 8x10 of that image and he was so super, siked.
Mannnn...That's fu**in art....mannn!
BTW His name is Charles he's a really nice dude and I think he lives in Staten Island. Makes some decent money from what I understand in the tourist/photo trade.

What a great job!! I saw this thread but was away flying and didnt have access to any computers that would let me play it out. I'm glad I remembered to check it out when i got back home... Made me nostalgic for NYC all over again. Its like I could hear the horns honking.. feel the energy all over again..and I pretty much love anything Etta ;) Although I think there are a few great songs out there that would fit... thanks for sharing. Fun pictures it all came together nicely.

That's a great montage! Pedro inspired me as well to make a few and now I'm obsessed with the program! I've made one for my best friend who had twins 1 year ago...I made a montage of their first year of life...I made one for my cousin's wedding and now I'm making one for my stepsisters wedding! They are so much fun, but I'm dying to learn more!
I'm having a hard time picking music to go with the new piece I'm doing...does anyone know a free program that will allow me to edit music (ie: only use, say, the middle of a song?)...
Also, I'd love to post my montages for people to comment on, so that I can improve..how do you guys do that?

Ask around the site and see if anyone will help you post it temporarily on their personl web sites...or maybe you know someone outside of DPC who can help you. Then hook us up with a link. I'd like to see it....good luck! |
