I'm not sure that's fair. There are just as many cows to tip in Cortland as there are in Ithaca!

Okay, I'm looking at the cameras that are coming along (people I can handle) and I think I will be embarassed with my little point and shoot! I don't even have any filters!

We've probably got about 6 people so far (including a few not on DPC). Anyone who can make it is welcome.

We'll be meeting at 7:00 AM at Stewart Park at the South end of Cayuga Lake (again, the date is Oct. 8). If anyone needs directions, feel free to PM me.

WHAT? I didn't see that!

EEEEKKK! That early on a SATURDAY??

Now I'm really afraid to show my equipment, especially that early in the morning!

First, no need to worry about your camera. I'm sure you do far better with your camera than I do with mine -- I just had more money to spend at the time than I probably should be allowed to :-)

Second, the morning will be great for lighting or weather, or possibly both. But, if you're really not that ambitious, you could always meet up with us later in the day.

I really do hope you'll join us, though. It sounds like we've got a good group and it's always fun to meet other DPC'ers.

OK, now that I've taken another look at your portfolio, maybe I should be afraid to show up!!! You've done some great work, and I hope you'll come share some of your tricks!

I'm not even sure I'll take my digital with me. I might be shooting all film...

Deannda,
I hope you'll consider coming along on the 8th!
Don't worry about the size of the camera--size really *doesn't* matter!
(Besides, I might let you try out my camera...do you use CF or SD cards?)
If you plan to come later--or tend to be the type who gets lost--PM me and I'll give you my cell# so you can find us.

Hahaha! Thanks! A big part is sheer dumb luck!

Wait until you see my "Corner of your world II" shot, I feel it's one of my best so far.

Is there an agenda for this -- in less formal terms, after we meet in the park, where are we going ;)

Can we roll in foliage, gorges, and waterfalls all in one day?

Will your schedule have any room in it to meet up if any of us have some spare time?

Ditto. I might be free for the following weekend.

Well I live here, so if anyone wants to get together any other time, let me know! More than likely I'll be around.

I will be able to attend afterall. I'm planning to go away 10/10-10/14. It would be tough but I could meet up for a 10/15 meet as well if MeThos and scalvert are around.

If you leave at 4am you should make it right on time. ;-)

It should be about a 3 hour drive from the Albany area. There's a Ramada Inn nearbly that is reasonable, a Marriott Courtyard that's a bit pricey, and a bunch of lower end motels -- not sure what you're looking to spend. I will tell you, though, that it's hard to get hotel rooms in and around Ithaca during October weekends. Between Cornell and Ithaca College homecomings and other events, they book up pretty fast. You might be better off finding something outside of town like Cortland or Binghamton. Send me a PM if you want me to look into anything for you.

If you can't find anything in Ithaca, Watkins Glen has several hotels and is only 30 miles away. You could follow me to Ithaca. Elmira is also about 30 miles away and has lots of hotels.

edit...I should read ahead before commenting. :-)

The gorges and waterfalls are typically combined...and there are leaves in gorges, too... ;-)

As far as I know there is no official schedule. There is no way to do all of the gorges/waterfalls in one day without rushing. There's plenty to shoot right in and around Ithaca, it's just figuring out what the majority wants to do, I think. Many of us live near Ithaca and you're traveling pretty far so if there's someplace specific you have in mind just let us know. I'm up for whatever the rest of you want to do.

Is Alienyst coming? Have we heard yet?

What about group transport? I have a van that can seat 7 including myself so I can take 6 people with me if we drive to other locations.

Group transport: I have a (very comfortable) mini-van and am an excellent driver....so we can "pool" if we want.

nshapiro: Which date are you thinking of coming? 8th or 15th?
It is beginning to look like I can make the second date as well.

Rolling in foliage: Until it falls off the trees, I suggest no one try to roll in it. Once it falls, one must consider the hazards of rolling near rocky glens and waterfalls.

Ithaca: Is one of the most beautiful, funky, interesting, diverse places on the planet...you *will* find your way back once you have been there! (Oh, and there are way too many fantastic places to eat--I think they rank among the highest restaurants per capita in the US.)

Agenda: Not needed. Wandering with vague direction will suffice. Believe me!

Huh. Didn't know that.

I like the 'wandering', myself. I'm not much for strict schedules and time contraints on shooting. Schedules make you rush off, unfinished to the next location and rushing is no fun. :-)

Just one source: Ithaca has more restaurants per capita than...
And also: Cornell

(Besides, I know a wonderful place in College Town for martinis and appetizers....but, I'm not staying over, so that's out for me.)

And you thought I was just a good tour guide for 'Ol Bingo-ville!
Ha! I'm filled with unusual and often inapplicable information!
(Now if I could just figure out DOF and exposure compensation for flash....)

Hmmm, so much to catch up on.

Agenda -- nothing set in stone. We'll definitely be looking for foliage, and gorges are probably in the cards as well. We can decide as a group which we want to shoot. I was thinking maybe Buttermilk Falls or Ithaca Falls as there may be some good foliage around them. There's obviously Taughannock Falls, but many of us have shot that to death lately. But if anyone wants to go out that way, I'm game. Other possibilities might be Cornell campus or the Plantations, or maybe even Ithaca College campus as they have great views of the lake and surrounding hills.

Restaurants -- yes, there's many to choose from -- some are even good. I imagine, though, that we'll probably want to spend more time shooting than eating.

Carpooling -- that's a great idea. My gas guzzler can hold 5 comfortably with plenty of room left over for equipment.

Film Users -- I'm definitely for it. That means he can't use the shots for any DPC challenges!!!

I haven't heard from Alienyst, but I'll PM him to see what's going on.
