I know it's pretty much meaningless, but it's annoying when you take the time to offer opinions and comments on a photo and they don't mark it helpful.
There are several people that only mark comments that say positive things about the photo helpful. Any offers of how it could be improved or any comment that is negative about their photo does not get checked. These are the people that will never improve because they think they are great already and just dismiss anything others have to say.
I'm at the point now that I won't comment on someone's photos when they post requests in the forums if they don't mark comments helpful.
I've considered removing all my comments not marked helpful and replacing them with a note that says "photographer found the comment not helpful." I won't do that because it would be childish and time consuming, but I thought about it.
Maybe I'll just start leaving nothing but happy positive comments? I can cut and paste "great photo!!!!" on all of them.

Wouldn't worry bout it Daryl, make the comment and move on knowing that you have helped someone. Some people don't mark comments, some only mark the one's they like, some mark them all as helpful. Each and every comment makes us learn something....we've had the unique opportunity to see our work through a strangers eyes.
So......don't stop making your lovely helpful comments, please don't change the way you comment......it's the comments that help us grow.

| Ya oftentimes my comments I leave have more to do with the fashion sense of the subject than they do with the technique of the photographer, and they still get marked as helpful! |

| In my defense, I only mark comments that I think are helpful. That doesn't mean they have to be possitive or negative, they have to tell me something they like, and something they don't like, or just things that they like. "Great Photo" isn't helpful. Also, if people don't care about your feedback, someone else might. I have only entered one photo in so far (plan on getting myself into gear and entering more) but I looke at other's photos and I read the feedback to see what other people think, not because I want to copy someones opinion, but I like reading some people's feedback, that is why I am a member of DPC, I think there are some truly amazing photographers on here and I respect their knowledge. But when someone says, I wish your camera would have been level, when in fact it was, I just cropped it so it was more interesting, that feedback wasn't all that helpful. Anyway, that's my two cents. Hope you don't stop putting good feedback, cus that would hurt the integrity of this site. |

I've noticed that most people who don't mark my comments helpful don't acknowledge any comments.
I'm assuming they may not be aware of this option, or they don't feel it's neccessary to do it.
If you ever need a "helpful" fix, get on over to my portfolio and make some comments!:) |

It's the same folks pretty much who don't mark comments helpful. Wouldn't it be interesting if they ask for comments after the fact or when they upload a new image in their portfolio?
Don't fret about it, just move on and keep on commenting :) |

One more thing on your profile I noticed is that you have made 1133 comments but recieved only 183.... Maybe you yourself should start taking part in more challenges and see what others have to say... Probably another way to learn what people like to write.
As some one said 'One's writing shows what they think' .. or something to that extent. You get the point I hope.

| I would prefer to see that button removed. I would like to see another button saying THANK YOU. Just a little tick that says thank you would be more meaningful. |

Thanks for the support. As I said I know it's meaningless and doesn't mean much, just kind of annoying. I do like the idea of changing the button to a thank you button though. I actually joined the critique club today, I want to get better at leaving comments and figured that will be a good way.
I'm trying to enter more challenges now, but I have a lot of things going against me for the challenges. I only shoot nature-outdoors stuff and that doesn't work for a lot of the challenges, and I'm very picky about what I submit. Not to mention I don't have a lot of time to go out and shoot for the challenges.

I've felt the same frustration, and I even once started a thread on the forms that was basically identicial to this! I try to be honest with my commentary (and usually try to couch my opinions in tactful language), but it's strange how often my comment is the ONLY one on a photo not marked helpful. Heh.
I'd like to see a box that says "this comment was NOT helpful" :P |

Keep in mind that even fewer people mark critique club comments as helpful. Dont know whether that's because they're not during the challenge, or because people dont like a criticism.. but it does annoy a bit when you spend 10 minutes at someone's photo and they dont even acknowledge it.

There's not better way than to learn to take photos of other things aside from nature and the outdoors than to participate in the challenges. I'm more inclined to architecture type shots but the learning process of being able to take a wide variety of images is unmatched. |
