Hi
i have P-3 733MZ PC with only 256 mb ram.
Well i notice after i have worked on a say 30 MB file in PS i notice strange things in my PC.

Icons of all different file change i.e word , excel, mp3 songs and they start resembling icon of say irafanview sometimes, sometimes of any other software .

I dont why it happens.
This thing happens only after working on heavy file in ps

you ever been overloaded at work, and had a hard time getting words to come out your mouth correctly? your brain is fried?

the computer is trying to tell you to ease up on the workload.
solution - let it go on vacation - or give it a raise ie: get more RAM...

If you are working in Adobe or really any photo program, beware they are memory hogs... Adobe PS has problems with 512 memory, some of the other programs not as much. Upgrade and you will see a big difference. We own a computer company, so if you have any other questions email me. But I can tell you it most likey is memory. I am bumping up to 2 gig, (1 gig will be fine) but I have 512 now and photoshope hates it and poops out.

save a lot, and reboot often - rebooting will clear the RAM, and give you a bit more umpff.

shut down any programs that are running in the background and are not necessary. turn off most things that run when the computer boots up.

photoshop asks the operating system to dedicate 256megs of RAM - so you are using all the available RAM for photoshop and starving the PC of memory for other tasks.

I read somewhere that using a scratch disk for photoshop is also a good thing, but have not yet figured my way round this as I am currently using a gig ram. Anyone?

I believe this uses a portion of your hard drive like RAM for reading and writing purposes. I installed an old hard drive as a slave and have it as my scratch drive that way it can use whatever it wants to.
RAM will most certainly help.

Scratch disk, this used to be called a 'swap disk' and it was possible to set the capacity you required to be used as memory. It was a user defined function with Dos, not sure if you still have this option with XP and NTFS.
