im very new to pricing and i have a hard time doing it. should i charge for going to the client's location if its going to take me about 40mins to get there? if so, how should i go about with the pricing? if any1 has any advice that would be great.

I would say it depends on what you're doing for them (or they're doing for you). When I have done house shots in the past, I charge an hourly rate and include travel in my time. If you're going for a model shoot, I wouldn't charge it.

This area is so different for everyone I believe you should charge whatever feels right to you. Possibly state up front that anything over a certain amount of miles gets charged accordingly for hourly jobs. Or you can figure in a little extra for a package deal if it involves travel.

In my Cowntry we have the Automobile Assosiation.
They prescribe standardised travel rates based on your car etc.

Possibly you have the same.

Might I suggest you put into your contract that travel time is incorporated with your hourly rate. ie. if you have to be on location at 9am and you leave the house at 8:15am then your time started at 8:15 and billing hourly from that point.

I have it at 35 cents per mile. I think for business there is a tax allocation for something like to 46 cents. (wear and tear, etc.)

from the IRS website:

The rate will increase to 48.5 cents a mile for all business miles driven between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31, 2005. This is an increase of 8 cents from the 40.5 cent rate in effect for the first eight months of 2005, as set forth in Rev. Proc. 2004-64.

what i would do is charge the client travel time as part of your hourly rate, but then make sure you take the mileage deduction (above) from whatever your profits are for the job. that mileage stuff really adds up!

edited to say: assuming you're in the USA, those rates apply. :)
