Hmm, I'm thinking about giving you some friendly competition :-)

Well, it's not exactly a contest, but some of you nighthawks might want to take stab at capturing some of the more-numerous-than-usual fireballs associated with the Taurid meteor stream.

Last Friday night Kirbic and I observed with a good sized group under dark skies about 30 miles south of Madison, and there were an unusually high number of bright meteors that night as well. I missed most of them, being glued to my camera and Mars, but I counted the gasps at one point that evening and recorded a record rate!

They're supposed to continue through the 10th or so ... good to know it's not just more government hype ... : )

It won't win any ribbons, but well worth trying. Just the sort of thing I'm likely to spend an evening on!

Well, you'll get a special unofficial ribbon from me if you pull it off -- I think there's way too much light pollution to try around here. Good luck!

Ooooh, sounds like a definite challenge! Now, then, let's conjure up some clear skies, eh?

Here's your (very) early heads-up for the upcoming Solar Maximum.

Got this in last week's NASA email -- this satellite has a 95MP sensor (array)!

The Kepler telescope is specially designed to detect the periodic dimming of stars caused by transiting planets. Some star systems are oriented in such a way that their planets cross in front of their stars, as seen from our Earthly point of view. As the planets transit, they cause their stars' light to slightly dim, or wink. The telescope can register changes in brightness of only 20 parts per million.

"If Kepler were to look down at a small town on Earth at night from space, it would be able to detect the dimming of a porch light as somebody passed in front," said James Fanson, Kepler project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

To accomplish this feat, Kepler will use the largest camera ever launched into space, a 95-megapixel array of charged couple devices or "CCDs."

NASA sent out this "pretty sky alert" about another astro-op -- a close conjunction of Venus and the crescent Moon, tomorrow evening (Friday, 2/27/09).

Why would the Venusians name a class of battleships after a Japanese Admiral?
