Bumming,

My first photo entry is doing poorly. 59 votes and its averaging 4.38.

I kind of expected it but ahh well chalk it up as learning experience.
06/04/2003 02:42:08 PM · #2
my first entry was a 3.9 and I've had 6's in 3/5 challenges recently.

Don't worry about it! You take nice photos - I love the one with the turtles and the sign:) Hopefully people will write comments so you'll know why you're not getting the scores you hoped for! Start thinking about office art and Magazine covers to distract yourself! Good luck!

Thanks for the encouraging words. I have been thinking about the other challenges and promised myself I wouldn’t settle on my entry this time. It is hard though to distract myself from my first entry though. How many times did you check when you entered your first?

Thanks again,

Jay

My submission is doing ok (6-ish) but I have no comments (out of 65 votes). Strange.

Forget your first entry. Move on. Take more shots this time - vary your lighting, don't settle for anything. You have a great camera - USE the thing! shoot 200 times this week. THEN pick one. Forget the stupid score. Turn it off in prefs if you have to.

I think that due to the high number of entries comments will be down.... I have 3 comments from 67 votes.... I track my votes if I am sitting at the computer and it always amazes me the diversity in the scores.... 3 one minute then a 10 the next..... go figure! Everyone's tastes are different!

No, I'm doing ok on comments - it just depends on how much your image isn't good or bad but prompts someone to TYPE and move and do something different. Great images, horrible images, disgusting images, sweet images, etc - get lots of comments.

how can you see the scores your getting. I only saw a total.

And thanks mavrik I appreciate your advice

If you are a member, you can update your stats any second you want to - so if you keep track

9 votes, 5.0
10 votes 4.6 well you got a 1. You went from 45 pts to 46 in 1 vote.

I got lucky on my first submission and got a 5.2 - I was thrilled. I got REALLY lucky on my second submission (with some help from my daughter, who suggested the shot) and broke the 6 barrier - I was overjoyed. Then, to find out how little I really know, i've been nosediving ever since! But it's helped me learn, and I'm improving with a pretty good (and doing pretty well) liquid entry. You'll get there (and hopefully, someday we all will!) if you keep trying - experience is the best teacher.

Mav, 200 shots a week? That sounds a little low... ;-) I shot 100+ shots Monday night for my liquid entry!

I have a little spreadsheet that calculates the score for the next vote based on my average x number votes.... every now and then I update the score and if it has gone up by 1 then I know what the last score was.... if the number of votes goes up by more than 1 then I recalculate.....

so what is my excuse? This is like my 80th entry. Another bad score. :-(( Oh well. I haven't gotten any comments either.

Im not so worried about where I finish as long as it isn’t dead last. I am however really looking forward to the Critique Clubs suggestions. Working hard on my photography hobby was one of my new year’s resolutions and I want to learn and get much better.

Looking at your scores, your regularly above 5, often in the 6s, and you have a ribbon! I think you're being too hard on yourself! It's been too long since you've had a string of 4s! ;-)

What I don't understand are the regular 1s and 2s and 3s that seem to appear on ALL photos... I mean if you look at some of the winners, who in their right mind is giving these ones? I don't think it's even a question of taste, some of these are without a shadow of a doubt above average and meet the challenge. I'm stumped!

One of my goals for a long time was always to avoid the 1s and 2s - I do it, but I never ribbon because of it. I think your shot HAS to piss someone off or rile them up or make them feel good/bad/other. I usually have less 1s and 2s than the at least one ribbon winner...that's surprising.

I think a lot of the 1's on good photos come from people trying to prop their own submission up - ever so slightly.

It would be a crying shame if this is the case. I know I never think about my own shot in comparison to those I vote on.

My liquid shot is crap...I know it, knew it wasn't going to be well received when I entered it and likely shouldn't have bothered (no, I DIDN'T click CC on it). I entered it because I thought it was a neat shot, but technically and aesthetically it probably doesn't appeal to anyone but me (hence the solid 3 I have on it).

Honestly, though, I have voted on just over 50 of the Liquid entries and I have not been wowed yet. In fact, I think I've voted more 1s, 2s, and 3s in this challenge than ever before. Highest score I've given thus far is a 7 or 8 and I was still left with a "well, it'll probably win, but I still think it's lacking something" kind of feeling about both of the higher scored photos. I thought maybe it was just a bad time for me to be voting so I stopped and will try to go back again later.

Was this for me? If so, I don't think I saw that one.

Your doing better than me! This is my first entry as well. I am actually quite delighted to be getting votes at all. My scores are low but the comments positive. Enjoy the experience.
06/04/2003 05:08:50 PM · #24
Yes Shari that was for you. If you didnt see it you should go back and find it its a real pisser lol

How many votes girgirgirl and comments do you have?

I have 66 votes and 0 comments.
06/04/2003 05:38:56 PM · #25
Both my entries have exactly the same number of votes, and are about .04 apart in score at the moment. Fortunately, that's quite a respectable score :-)

never seen so many brand names ina challenge as for liquid: hope one doesn't win, don't want that kind of advertising allover the front page of the site for a week
