Am I first?

I think so.

Ok I'll add something to this.

This is my 3rd challenge entry, and I'm pretty happy with the finish. Got lots of very nice comments. It was a last minute entry, taken at about 10 pm the night before voting began. I wanted to enter but really didn't have any original ideas. Then a song came on the radio, and this popped into my mind. I originally wanted to do a low angle shot looking up at the boot looking like it's going to step on the camera, but my tripod doesn't go that low and I couldn't hold the camera still enough with my hands to get a good night shot. This turned out well though, thx everyone who commented and voted.

Looks like you got great comments on it, I am sorry I ran out of time before I could comment too. It was one of the best here. Very popular.

My entry was misunderstood I am afraid, LOL, but it caused some reaction and that is better than no reaction.

Randomly the average vote went from 4.8 to 5.0.

Six nice comments and one on how the "dog hair is a wee bit distracting."

Satisfied.

Well, mine did'nt score quite as good as I'd hope but this was a tough challenge, being so big and a narrow topic. Several commenters got it though, and one fav, so I'm happy :-) I still really like the pic.

This was my first challenge Average Vote: 5.069
Don't know exactly how this vote translates but 1 came 193rd out of 462
not quite started on a good note i guess !!

Hey, Tater, I placed your photo as my favorite. I really liked it for some reason.
09/07/2005 04:49:16 AM · #9
Well,

I averaged a 5.051 in the end, so I am happy with the result for my first entry. position 199 out of 461 (I'm sure that's changed? has someone been DQ'd?)

Not many constructive comments though.
What does everyone else think? Where did I go wrong?

I know it is not a very original idea, though I can see that now the challenge is over! WIll have to try harder on the next one!

A 4.183 and comments that were received indicate that many folks did not really look at this image - an xray within a shoe. Basic editing prevented me from bringing out the xray more.
Oh well.

Until now I hadn't noticed anything but a bland badly lit image of a shoe. But now I see what you were aiming at I can see it. Unfortunately its those first 3 seconds which you have to smack the voter between the eyes, and this as you say, needs some advanced editting to achieve that.

This was my first challenge. I tried to take them from an interesting angle. It's slowly sinking in to my thick skull that a good photo needs to tell a story and not be a static subject. Any extra comments would be much appreciated.

I hereby challenge the troll who gave my Shoes entry a score of 1 to a fist-fight! I'll meet you by the flagpole after school.

Thanks to everyone that commented on my entry.
Some explanation for a couple of points brought up in the many comments.

1) Color of the wood. The wood is as it appeared. I split a few pieces from the pile in the background, so it's fresh split. It started raining after I had everything setup so I packed up the camera until the rain ended (it was a light drizzle really). The wood being wet, took on a darker more saturated tone.

2) No lumberjack. Well, the lumberjack is me - part time around the house anyway, therefore I couldn't be in the boots and in the photo at the same time. Actually, I never really thought about it since it was a shoe challenge. Guess, I could have set the 10 second timer. That would have been interesting! ;^)

As for the rest of the wood pile, it's going to wait for splitting. It's not up in rotation until next summer...besides, I might need it for a prop again. He-he.

Had I bought my flash a week earlier I think this shot would have done well. However since we weren't allowed spot editing the shoes were just too dark!

Thanks also to everyone who voted/commented on my entry. This being my first challenge, and with so many entries, it was a bit daunting, but great fun & a valuable experience for me.
I've only really discovered photography in the last year, and know that I still have a huge amount to learn, but I'm thrilled with my score on this first try - 6.0460 average!

I found it interesting that shortly before the end of voting I had had 335 votes but after the end of voting that number had been cut to 301 so 34 votes got trashed for whatever reason (trolls voting in trends and people not meeting the minimum requirements). Hmmmm and I didnt get even one 1 !!!!! Also on a challenge with 461 entries and only 301 votes.

Lori - Must have been a bunch of trolls...my score was 5.64 around 9PM. After the rollover it finished at 5.79.

Nice photo by the way - I like your "Cowgirl Footwear"... ;^)

i'm sorry to say that i missed the x-ray as well... guess i voted too quickly... i'd have give you another point or two if i'd have noticed... sorry.

as for my entry, the comments were quite useful...

i can now see what distracted everyone else about my background. it was kind of hard to get the flash aimed right to get the green glow in the smoke. (still now sure why it would take 3 ones... trolls...)

i'm sure now, i could redo it and get a much higher score... live and learn. as is, i almost broke 100, so i'm happy enough...

oh... and the guy that didn't use smoke for his 'stink' cheated... ;)

tho i received my lowest challenge score ever, haha, just want to share some replies to the funny and useful comments i received on my shoe entry.

i tried to capture something that is an everyday sight in our house (thanks digidori for noticing). this was taken from the stairs going up to the second floor of our house that's why I tried to show the dining room partly. It was not a tabletop photo as some commented. the sign is really old and tatty. Its been there for 10 years worn out by the scriblings of my 4 kids (now 11,10 9 and 7 yrs old). thanks for seeing that Poetryincolor.

Didn't use black and white and intentioned that socks and shoes be as it is. I want to show the pink colors and the carefreeness of my little ones.

btw, although we are in the tropics, the wooden floors upstairs are sometimes cold. we have special slippers for the bedrooms.

thanks for all your comments. it was fun reading them esp if you know where i'm coming from.

I'm happy with my results. I thought it may do better than 5.2, but still is decent enough for a last minute decision while hiking with my girlfriend. Also, and for the first time for any challenge I have entered, No 1's!!! :) Very happy about that!
