Macro

'Get up close and personal with your subject this week. You need not specifically use your macro feature, but your image should be a close-up shot. Don't forget, you must take your photograph this week (11/4-11/10).'

In my opinion, I think the challenge should be renamed to "Close Up". This will let macro be used obviously, and for people without a macro feature on their cameras, their photos will fit more into the challenge.

This makes it fairer.

I can imagine, come commenting, close up shots that ARE close up but are not macro, will get comments saying "not a macro" or along those lines.

Macro is included in the category "Close Up" so it is my suggestion that maybe the topic title should be adjusted.

I agree.. This alienates thos who do not have a macor facility on their camera or the ability to attached closeup lenses.

Would that not invite people to post other kind of close up pics. Like "Look at this tree at 5000m that I shot with my 600mm lens."

Or is that not a close up?

photographically, im excited about the macro challenge.

macro is one of my favorite photographic aspects and the NL+4 closeup lens i got to attach to the front of my e-10 really enhances the camera's macro abilities. for example: Using My Macro Setup was shot with this setup.

The native macro abilities of the e-10/20 are not as good as many cameras - closest you can get is about 11 inches, although you can use full telephoto from that distance. however, the thread-on lens (cost $30 from bhphotovideo.com) let's you get within an inch of the subject.

i cant wait to get off work so i can go explore the 'small world' : )

Instead of the +4 thread-on lens (I have it and it´s fantastic) you can get a whole set of lenses (+1, +2 and +3). These you can combine and get up to +6. In Sweden this set costs about $40.

wow. I wonder how good optically it would be if i combined two +4 lenses or even more?

I've got a hoya 49mm set that gets me to +7, (+4, +2, +1) though
they start vinetting because of the large stack of filters :)

Macro is a digital photography term, and I think it definitely has a place on this site. I don't know how much better we can do for those without the macro feature than saying flat out in the description, "You need not specifically use your macro feature, but your image should be a close-up shot."

I just think some people will vote higher on the macros because they "fit the challenge better", and that shouldn't be the case.

Try to get Close-up lenses several steps up from your lens thread size, i.e. I have a 55mm thread but use 58mm closeup lenses (with a step-up), this cuts down on CA as you are using more of the center of the lens and not the edges...

good tip! thanks!

I just hope that whatever people choose as their subject it looks better than a snapshot.

Work on the technical aspects like lighting, composition, depth of field creative cropping, etc, etc.

Seems like so many photos have turned into snapshots with flat compositions, straight on shoots, poor lighting and flash and no real concern for technique just to fulfill the challenge. <:-/

It is very easy to get caught up in the subject of your photo and forget about some or all of the photographic elements. As long as we keep talking about it and we keep practicing with these challenges we will all improve in that area. I think this 'Macro' challenge will put the focus squarely back on technique for most of us. It should be a good challenge.

Alan, what kind of flower do you fancy? Real or fake we aim to please.

Made my first 113 shots this evening.
And those cover only 15% of my list with subjects that I want to try out. Oh, no! :-)))))

Oh, any old flower will do, I guess :) If I were a betting man, I would put money on the fact that there will be a minimum of 30 flower images (real or fake) this time around. I'm hoping to be proven wrong :)

I hope there are... flowers are excellent subjects for macro shots. You should try it sometime... if you think you can do it well :)

I don't disagree with you one bit that flowers are excellent subjects for macro images. It almost seems that "macro" immediately conjures up an image of a flower (in fact, I believe that one of my cameras uses a flower icon by the button for the macro setting). I'd personally prefer to see some creativity here since it's a pretty open-ended challenge. Flowers are pretty, but I can honestly only look at so many of them before I start thinking "Ah. Another damn flower" while voting...

9 times out of 10, a macro will be better (by better, I mean more appealing in a photographic sense) than a close-up without macro, regardless of a challenge element.

I'm just excited that for the first time in a while I've got multiple ideas for this challenge. And it's only Monday! Lately I've been stumped and frustrated all week long. :-)

I love macros and I love flowers. ;-) Not saying that's what I'll shoot, but it doesn't bother me to see them. As long as someone puts a little time and effort into their photo, that's all I ask.

I know what you are saying... I feel the same way about salt shots this week. When that happens, you just have to slow down... spread your voting out so that you don't get burned out on similar images in a hurry...

Are belly button macros considered creative/artistic?
11/04/2002 02:15:34 PM · #25
I'd say that my personal belly button would not have too much artistic value, particularly before I go through my daily de-linting ritual :)
