Whenever I try to open a Canon CR2 RAW file, it says "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document"

What I do is double click the file, and Photoshop automatically opens with the file, but the error message appears and no RAW file.

Now, am I just opening the RAW files the wrong way?

Double clicking should do the trick. What version of the RAW plugin are you using?

Could it be that you need to download the latest plugin?

You may need the RAW conversion update. Try the download at www.adobe.co.uk/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html

I use RawShooter Essentials 2005 by preference - available as a free download from www.pixmantec.com

RawShooter has a nicer interface. But CS2 should open the files fine the way you are doing them. Make sure the Adobe update supports your camera/file etc.

I'm still waiting for support for the new Pentax istDL in either RawShooter or Adobe. I guess it's ok, but the Pentax software pales to nothing by comparison.

Means I have too much software on my machine taking up photo space! Grrr!

Ho hum, serves me right for buying such a new model....

edit: typo

Well I am also having the same issues with CS2 and DNG with Pentax RAW (PEF) files, I have both plugins, the one from Pentax (PTXRAW01.8ba) and the adobe one (Camera Raw.8bi) and I still cannot open PEF files, even though in the open file type dialog it says .PEF as one of the raw formats it will open. Also DNG does not recognise them at all.

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated, thanks.

Having had a discussion with the guys on the rawshooter forum, I have found out that pentax have changed the raw format for .pef files. I was assured support would be available in the new version of rawshooter.

You probably have the plugin for either the *istD or *istDL. Where did you get them btw?

I have plugins for the istD from the Pentax website, and I also got the updated RAW plugin from Adobe, but neither do much for the istDL RAW images.

The software that came with the *ist DS has an update, but you have to have the software that came with the camera for the update.

Raw Essentials seem to work nicely for conversion.
