Seems like the only people that got close to winning were people with thin or muscular models. Or maybe its just me...

althought there definately was an unfair slant towards those who * were not* in thiere magizine beautiful prime (check out bicrays entry placement as a good example); there actually weren't but a handful of curvacious models (fat people is a little harsh). If there were more full figured models, they would have been more in the higher placing slots.

Photography usually is about creating an idealistic reality. No one want's to look at reality in the human form, it reminds them at a basic level of how frail we all really are.

We like powerful, beautiful images of people, because it makes us feel like humanity can really be powerful and beautiful, and that we are too.

Actually IMHO, it had nothing to do with the models... the shots with the "more realistic" body types just weren't as good from a technical standpoint.

people hang a picture on the wall because its pleasing to look at.

Unless we're dealing with photojournalism, where reality = the picture. But we usually arnt.

Should have Michelangelo's david been an unfit fat guy?

It's art.

At least that is where it sometimes starts.

Sigh. Living with an eating disorder is no joke, my friend. : (

Don't think that it's just a female disease either... "No fat boys" is just as relevant in today's society (if not even more so). Either way you slice it, you end up bulimic or worse. I know that my high school wrestling coach taught me very well how beneficial it is to binge & purge. (Sad but true...)

Please don't take this as endorsement of bulimia or anorexia - it's not. If you are binging & purging or starving yourself to death, you need help - nothing to be ashamed of, a fact. Just an average Joe's take on the situation.

You are very right. Thanks for the reminder.

And sorry if I get a little rant thing going here, that's not what I was trying to do. : )

Quite an interesting comment there.

Could it be you are simply desiring attention. It is easy to critisize when you are not contributing anything yourself:

Could it be you are disgusing your own "shortcomings" in a veiled attempt at machoism by posting a controversial comment in a public group such as this.

There were many people who shed their inhibitions and bared all figuratively and literaly. Those who did so really showed courage, acceptance of themselves and a willingness to be accepted by their peers.

You?

hey Ihave a better take on the three ribboners....they were all very nicely done technically but very very boring..........
09/02/2005 10:22:41 PM · #18
I don't think this thread has to take anything away from the top 3 finishes (or the overall results as a whole). It's just a location in which we can voice our objections to popular society's view of beauty. In my opinion, the three top finishers deserved their spots - they were very visually appealing and technically executed very well. I think some of us are just saying that it's a shame some other shots were apparently shot down for displaying full-figured (larger) models than we are accustomed to seeing splashed on the cover of today's trendiest magazines. :-) (I hope I said what I meant...)

EDIT: corrected grammar (I hope)

Agreed, I guess my point was that they had nice form but as pictures they were lacking in much other than camara and lens. So in a way, I am agreeing that they were voted for because of their looks not for the quality of the space.

I respectfully disagree.

Photography takes many forms. The photograph can and has been throughout history one of the best records of a society. Humans are powerful, beautiful, sublime and horrific. It is what you take from the photograph that defines in your own mind the quality of the shot.

Take these three for example:

Powerful? Beautiful? Pulitzer prize winners.

Seek out your own beauty and don't be afraid to admire it even if it is not what the rest of the sheep are drooling over.

Yes, it has provided us we a visual record of 'us'. What we do with this is up to us. Some pictures are page fillers and some..............fill our minds and reverberate through our souls!

I believe the "no fat chicks" comment was in reference to homer simpson, who used it a few times and even had a t-shirt with it on.

I think photodude would agree that there is nothing wrong with fat chicks.

Not everybody starves themselves. I have good metabolism...the more I eat...the more weight I lose. Is that a reason why I should not use my own photograph in a Nudity challenge....as I may upset some people and make some people think that I have to starve myself to be that size. 5'7" and under 100 pounds isn't so great. You try and find girls clothes that suit a woman!!

In summary...we all have issues...but how you deal with them is up to you. Don't take your anger out on the world....if you feel strongly about something...then do something constructive to help the situation...not blame the world.

I am not very into this nudy thingy. and I am not a memeber, I can not vote either.

I am new to photography. What I understand about photography is: it is a form of art. and art is to express beauty. so what is our defination of beauty? hmmmmm..... isn't it also why those photos were voted up?

Many things are quite simple, yet hard to accept.
