As everyone has said, you are absolutely amazing Joey.

I always wondered what it would be like to have known a great director before they made it famous...now I know. I can't wait to see your films in the theatres.

Joey, I am interested as to what editing software you used?

BTW Nice job

That was a very trippy, and excellent, short film. Awesome!

Way to go Joey! I was laughing so hard. You have great talent and just keep it up.
p.s. what did you use to film this anyway as well as the editing software.

I see a future prospect to out do Quentin Tarentino. I laughed and I sighed and I was like this kid is crazy. Well done.

Joey,
Two thumbs up, way up!

The cuts near the beginning after Justin made the paper airplane and threw it, pointing out blame, the snore... the angles & timing were great. The cuts leading to the dream sequence with the clock, also had great flow.

Love the T-Rex part, how did you get the high angle from the T-Rex PoV? Did you run along a roof? Put the camera up on a pole? I always suspected T-Rex's saw everything in black & white, now I know.

The cut to the super Mario sequence was a bit abrupt, but a good segway into the Fame sequence. Maybe you need some sort of effect similar to the "going into the forest" effect you used later.

Slight flub on the drop of the rabbit-head. It would have been much more effective if there were a pre-determined mark to drop it on, then cut to that spot for the drop & back away again. A pretty creepy image, I like it.

The framing was off again at the very end, where I'm able to see the happy-face mask on the smiley face poparazzi too early. I think it would have been a much more effective punchline to have used a cut, or better framing to solve that.

I think you got a little lazy with the editing near the end, but I thoroughly enjoyed your film. Great job! I can't wait to see some of your work when you have a billion dollar budget. What grade did you get?

Keep this up, and you'll be an indie flick master in no time. I thought it was brilliant...your lead actor has real talent with great expressions. I think if I spent a moment with your visions, I'd walk away seeing in shades of technicolor. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the comments everyone! Glad you all dig it, and thanks for the tips too.

No way, I've heard some bad things about that school from family. I've heard better things about Sheridan. I'll probably go there

Adobe Prmiere to edit it, but was shot with just a standard MiniDV home camcorder. I then converted it to 25 frames a second on Premiere so it had more a 'cinema' feel. (Home camcorders shoot at around 30 frames a second)

Thanks for all the constructive critism and tips Slippy! That's the kinda stuff I love to hear. :-)
You were right, I taped my camera to a giant pole and chased around my friend for awhile! Har har har! >:)

And it wasn't even for school! But I did play it at the school talent show in front of everyone on a big projector, and everyone loved it! I sold a buncha copies too

Holy crap dude! I didn't think it was possible for me to be more impressed... That was really great! I thought your transitions were really inventive and appropos. And I loved the music! I must admit it did seem more like an acid trip than a dream (*ahem* of course that's based strictly on heresay). Awesome job. =)

Wow, I am amazed. Great job, Joey!

edited to add: I just showed my husband and his reply was "That is awesome...that kid has it going on."

Alright, I thought maybe with all the flowery comments everyone was being just a bit too nice because you are young. But that was damn good. Highly entertaining.

When you need an agent, let me know.

looks like something I had to write a paper for in film class! Nice job. The smiling faces were eirily good. The walking backwards in time was incredible. Did the person walk backward or was it a type of editing? If he walked backwards, he deserves a raise, as he looked really natural.

Yeah I had the feeling this one come... It's hard to compress quicktimes for me because of the software I use. But I'll look into it later jussst for you... (And many other mac users)

Yep, I made him walk backwards then just reversed it, so now he is forwards and everything else is backwards. Most of the people in the hall didn't know they were being filmed (except the people close to the camera who I told what to do) so it was pretty natural. And yeah he did a great job walking backwards.

I think a lot of kids thought I was really effed up or something, making people walk backwards, chasing kids with poles, having a big gang of smiley face paparazzi hanging around... But after everyone saw it, it all clicked ;-)

Damn, Joey!
And I thought I hated you before... ; ) (Sorry I don't have anything terribly constructive to say, like Slippy did, lol.)

Wow. Well, at least I, along with everyone else here, will be able to say, "Hey! I knew him back when I was 15!"

You're just too good, you know?

edit:
Did I mention that the movie was freakishly awesome and that I loved it? : )

Joey...YOU'RE SUCH A DAWG!!!!!

:P

Anyways, Joey....I ask when you get to Hollywood you remember this guy named the Saj. You've got the creativity (that's one of the key components to succeed in visual art) but you also have the tenacity (the go out and do it which is required to turn the creativity into substance).

You're style is already evident (you are one who takes your visual arts to an "expansionary" view outside the box). This is evident in both the posted movie and your photographs.

However, I would not wait till you get to school to do your next film. Having seen this work I think it is worth your saving up a little $$$ to move up to the next video camera grade. And then frankly, I encourage you to find some local area "punk" bands and offer to do a music video. I think you will find numerous willing "actors" in punk bands. And truthfully, your video which felt very reminiscent to a music video surpassed a lot of the crap I see on music TV.

I think it very likely you might be able to get a few music videos under your belt...and perhaps such might help with scholarship $$$ for school.

Just please remember to take school with a grain of salt and a dash of pepper. What I mean by that is "you will learn a lot in school and become aware of your mistakes" but you must at the same time recognize what you must discount from that instruction so as not to begin putting yourself in a box....learn how to improve your art but don't let it stunt your creativity.

PS - Joey, do watch the film done with just the 20D. I think it'll impress you if you haven't seen it. I was quite impressed.

Yeah man I'm already making a band a music video actually. :-D
They are still trying to come up with what they want, I've given a few ideas. I can export the video into photoshop and apply my grungy things to the video. 8-)
and
Thanks for the words :o)

Sheridan...yeah, that's what I meant. Ryerson is really good but Sheridan is the one you want for video. A friend of mine goes there...

His site is //www.bumbleecowboy.com (this makes Joey's stuff look normal). I'm not big on his stuff but the school is supposed to be awesome.
