I switched on my computer a little while ago and discovered that my black and white wallpaper has turned black and purple. I had this problem a couple of years ago and managed to mess around with some settings that got the colours right, but everything would have a greenish tinge while the computer was starting up. Now I can't remember what I did and I'm not sure I went about things the right way anyway.

How can I get it right? Don't tell my to take my computer for repair because I can't manage without it, but there's something very strange going on. When I bought Elements 3.0 a couple of month ago, it was giving some message about a problem with the colour profile but I've never known how to fix it and managed to use it anyway. It doesn't matter though, as long as it looks like the colours are right.

shut down your machine for 5 mins, reboot it once, uninstall all apps loaded in last three weeks, reboot the machine again, format the hard disk...... while I figure out the problem.

:-)

Sorry, just kidding. I don't know what might have caused it. But you can try to go into display properties and try looking at the options there.

You have a virus called "PUR-plexed"; it takes what should be black-and-white issues and paints them over with purple prose.

Sorry, couldn't help myself.

First, try re-seating (unplug and re-plug) the video cable at the monitor and PC to make sure it's not a bad or corroded connection.

If you think its a software problem as opposed to a hardware issue, and you're running Windows XP, try using system restore to go back to a time when the display looked correct.

Try to degauss your monitor

It's probably not software. How old is the monitor?

It is more than likely a cable/connector problem with the monitor cable - you're getting no green pixels, basically.

If it isn't that, then try the vid card.

If it's really neither of those things, then you have a really weird other problem: I can't imagine why/how any software issue would remove the green signal from your display.

Oh - a test. When you boot the system, does the first text you see look purple or white?

I had a similar prob once, with green instead of purple, and it turned out to be a loose cable at the back o the monitor!

It's not the monitor, because I've got an old computer and the problem doesn't occur when I connect the monitor to that one. I wondered about this myself because the first time this happened was shortly after I bought this monitor.

I've now worked out that what I adjusted last time was the adobe gamma setting and that made it look right, though the booting colour was a bit weird.

I guess I should try that before playing with the gamma. But at least I think I have a possible way to get around it otherwise.

Thanks. This seems to have solved my problem. Hopefully it won't come back anytime soon.
