Ok, basically, i suck at borders. I generally hate them, and think they're completely unnecessary and pretentious for digital images... however, i also value a good border on a print (especially one too large to frame affordably).

So here's the deal: can you folks suggest the perfect border for this image?

It has to be simple, not overstated, not pretentious, not huge and ugly nor super-fine-detailed and tiny. Something to tastefully complement the image. I'm ok with simple black borders, but something different is needed for this given the mostly black edge, so i need your help!

OK, folks. What program do you use to make borders? Are they all legal in the rules for the challenges?

Kind of makes it look like a framed gallery piece.

Photoshop.....they are legal but no clipart or text. And they are usually not well received.

Cool, thanks everyone - i think i'll go for a simple double-line style like UNCLEBRO's or MrsFuzzButt's versions, it suits the image best. I'm trying to avoid having too much white in the border as it seems to give the image less depth, but that's possibly due to my crop being a bit tight around the top of the image.

Again, thanks for all your cool suggestions :)

Well, for a certain value of "final" i guess... got any suggestions? Your one had the right idea but a little too much white distracted the eye i think.

Wasn't referenced to my version...just your final opinion.

Personally, I don't like borders on photos to be viewed online. I mat and frame pics every day and I guess I viewed it in that context. I would not mat that particular pic in black nor would I recommend to a customer to do so. You want the pic to stand out not blend in, not get lost in the mat and frame. The dark on dark makes the frame/mat look like it is an extension of the pic and in this case your pic is so dark you need something to make it the center not the whole.

Actually, i agree with you 100%. I'm generally not a fan of borders at all, online they're pointless and in real life a mat does the job. Trouble is, i've had people commenting (elsewhere) that they'd like to see that image with a border. Looking around dpcprints, many similar shots have also been bordered and this seems to improve their saleability (dunno what people are expecting when they see these online, imo a good deal of them would look pretty crap printed if you're not careful). So i dunno really.

SDW65: way too cheesy for what i was going for i'm afraid, but nice work. Actually if i were doing that i'd have had the inner frame square possibly, so it gives room for the beak to overhang... nice idea, i'll have a play with it :)
