Driving along the Mississippi River between Pikes Peak, Iowa and Red Wing, Minnesota.

Vermont is fine, just a bit west from it is where I took this one:

I think I went a week too early (07-X-2004). I don't know when did you go last year, but definitely plan on hitting the peak if possible for the best results.

Even though you've been in the area last year, there are many places to drive around and get the pretty views for the second time. You can even drive east to vermont...

Aspen, Colorado is also good for foliage.

The best fall foliage I've seen was in Sendai, Japan
(not that I am suggesting a GTG there :))

This is actually an impossible answer...I'll explain!

I live in New England, regarded highly for it's beautiful foliage. Usually Vermont and New Hampshire will have the nicest foliage, however, it is in fact determined by the weather at the time.

Several years ago Connecticut receive a quick cold snap (which triggered massive foliage change) followed by warm weather that allowed beautiful comfortable observance of the foliage. That year, our foliage surpassed Vermont's and New Hampshire's in beauty and color.

In fact, they often toward the fall will give a foliage forecast of "when and where" the most beautiful foliage is to occur.

I'd love to see if we can try and make it so we have one where we can meet you. Last year we did the Adirondacks (Lake George Region), but we were about a week late for the peak. Perhaps this year we can do a few GTGs in fall. One trip is not enough for the beautiful foliage!

I'm in for that GTG. Catskills, Adirondacks or Vermont all sounds good to me. I'll be shooting in Bear Montain during the fall which is close to me. (well.. somewhat close)

If you're looking for Fall Colour right now there are probably areas of Northern Alberta where the leaves have already started to change. In Edmonton, it's still mostly green but there are some areas where the leaves have already turned colour.

New England definitely has the upperhand for fall colors from what I've seen. But since your profile says out West, depending where that is, Napa Valley is beautiful in the fall if you like wine country. Just lots of warms yellow tones especially in the afternoon sun. Lot's of photo ops. Yosemite is really nice too, with the aspens and oaks (I think that's what they are) giving the same kind of warm yellow tones. But both of these won't have much in the way of the "true" fall colors.

I lived in Albany, NY for four years. Peak foilage in the area (upstate New York, Southern Vermont, Berkshires) was usually around the second week of October, but that does vary by season by a week or so. The Albany paper would have a foilage report. If you were able to make a last minute flight, you could try to watch that online and go from there.

Central New York--Ithaca--lakes, gorges, waterfalls, hills and views....
...but I live nearby, so I'm partial.

Key to getting great scenics is to find a more mountainous region where you can get above the valleys or where the colored hillsides rise above you.

As others have mentioned, depends on the time....the colors start North and creep South...so, in order in NY, Adirondaks, Catskills, Central NY. I think we peaked around Columbus Day last year.

Pretty much anywhere in New England can be great if you time it right. This is from the same Lake George GTG Nshapiro mentioned-

I'll be there!

Here's a shot of the Bear Mountain Bridge in October. Anyone taking a trip there give me a heads up and I'll meet up with you. I live very close by.

I second that- especially the area north of Asheville around Craggy Gardens.

I need to know when at least a month ahead of time. Plane tickets aren't cheap if it is less then 14 days.

Awesome pictures from all of you. I just need to figure out where to go now. Vermont looks pretty good so far. Would there be anyone willing to meet up there?

Greetings,
With it plethora of covered bridges, the highest peak in the Northeast USA, tons of outlets for plundering (or is that shopping), and amazing mountains and streams Northern New Hampshire has to be among the best spots for the leaf peepin'

Well I live in Delaware now, but I have lived in Connecticut (Costal Portion), New Hampshire (Costal Portion), and Main (Costal Portion)... Maine beats'm all hands down... You can fly into Logan INT in Mass and do Boston the Cape, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, and Even Connecticut over a long weekend of driving. Or Start at Hartford INT in Connecticut and work your way up the coast.
