So I've been burning and burning.... (and burning!) disks and I think I'd like an external drive. I was told by a computer guru friend of mine that I should get one that connects thru the USB port cuz it's faster (and I will want to hook it up to my new computer whenever I may get one!)

How do you guys all store your images? Any advice?

Thanks! :0)

I use a 120gb external USB 2.2 hard disk, worth every penny I spent on it. About £80 in UK.

If your comp is USB2, the external drive is USB2 compatible infomation may be exchanged faster but it doesn't effect the speed that the drive reads and writes to a disk hooked up to it.

Might I siggest that you split your images into at least 2 groups. First group is family/friends etc
Second group is portfolio shots. (something you'd really want to show someone)

This way when you back up family shots you will know you can delete them from system. and portfolio shots you can store online as another source of backup.

I use the external hard drive on my PC and my laptop...also take it to friends' houses and load my pics on their PCs!

Go for it.

If you have an internal that you are not using you can hop on Ebay and buy a hard drive enclosure for around $30-$40. That is what I use.

That's a good idea, rex...saves a lot of money as well.

It really depends on your computer, and the connections it has. I would say if it has Firewire go with that, but Firewire and USB 2.0 (not USB 1), are both around 144Mbps, so you can't really go wrong with either. Although USB 1, only does 12Mbps, so it is considerably slower.

Depending on how many pictures, you may look at an iPod Photo, stores images, and would act as a viewer, they also make some portable hard drives for this specific purpose, that also have CF,SD,etc card slots.

As for me, I just have a 360GB RAID on one of my computers.

I took one of those eBay external drives apart so that just the board and the plugs are there and now I can swap out HDs in seconds and it will work on both my PC and my Mac.

I don't know what firewire is so I must not have it! :0)

nsbca7- that's a great idea. (not that I have the ability to do it or anything!) But I'm only on PC anyway.

2:1 rule. 200gb for $100 or 100gb for $50 is a good deal for a HD. Externals drives are normally more expensive. Cheaper route is to get a HD and buy your own external case.

There wasn't anything to it. I take almost every piece of electronic gear I get apart anyway to see how it works. Just this time it seemed like a better idea to leave it apart. The harddrives just plug right in to the back of the board.

one copy on main hard-drive (drat the 160 is pretty much full) a copy on the external hard-drive and then copy backed up to DVD (or CD depending on how old).

Now that is a good idea too! But it wouldn't plug into USB would it? Not that I have to take it places- it'd just be nice.
So if I get a USB 2 it's still compatable with my port that's not "2" right?

If you buy a model with USB2 it will. And, yes, most USB2 devices are backwards compatable.

USB 1.0 and 2.0 are compatible with one another, but if your USB port is a 1.0 port, then the drive will only run at 12Mbps.

Double DVD backups on MAM-E (archival quality) DVD-R's.

But a firewire external HD will be added later this year (still double DVD-R backups).

If I may chime in here. Get a laptop drive and a 2.5 shell for it. Small, portable and connects using USB2. The USB is also the power source.

Mine looks like this:

My drive is 30gb and the whole setup cost me $35. But you can get larger drives. Here is a good deal on a shell. Of course it's ebay. Then it's just a matter of finding the right drive for you. Newegg has some good deals.

Companies like Delkin have portable DVD/CD burners that you can use away from a computer or with the computer. Could be heplful if those traveling with you don't have multiply cards or storage.

Some of these devices use special batteries and others use AAs. Do some research depending on your needs.
