| hi everybody. I was recently contacted to take pictures for my college newspaper (The Daily Illini) and I'm really excited because they provide everyone with Nikon D1H's for every assignment. I've never used Nikon or a camera near this quality before...just wondering what everyone thought of it...thanks! |

Evan,
What kind of a college are you going to? Any good school would provide you with Canon's!!!!
The formula doesnt change, its you being there and taking an interesting photo regardless of what camera you have. |

| haha i go to the university of illinois in urbana champaign. i've never shot sports before so i was wondering how this camera performed. tripod during events like that or not necessary? |

Whats the deal with Nikon bashing? There is nothing wrong with my D70 and acording to DPreview.com it blows the digital Rebel out of the water. Just saying.

Well for me the 300 is sort of a place holder for the 30D. I guess the whole 5D thing pushed that back 6 months, but actually the 300 has turned out to be a pretty good machine withing its limits.
as for evan's questions, I think like most college students - you drink too much so a tripod would be a good thing |

well if you use the crack on canon rebels firmware, its almost as good as a 10D wiht a plastic body,

hmm no one is really answering your question. but you can read a review on it here //www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond1h/ the camera is kind of old now and the sensor is really outdated. but waht photojournalist needs a 6 mp sensor? the d2hs, nikon's new flagship photojournalist tool only has 4 mp. the d1h has around 3. the camera will probably be pretty worn, but these bodies were made for rugged use.

mp means megapixel. your sony has around 5 i think. that means your sony will have better resolution than the d1h and d2hs

I would say no to the tripod. It will just get in the way. You need to up the ISO and stay with larger aperture to keep the shutter speed up. A monpod can help. Remember, the athletes are moving so even if you steady the camera it will do no good if the shutter spped is slow. Assuming you do sports photog. But even students will normally be moving.

Hi Evan, I've used the D1H at my school's paper. I'd recommend against the tripod as well. I've never needed one on any of my sports assignments, though a monopod is essential if you'll be using 300mm or longer length prime lenses (they're pretty heavy if you haven't used one before). The D1H performs very well for journalism shots. The lower resolution isn't an issue imho.

| keep in mind that for newspaper work you can often get away with a higher ISO to help keep the shutter speeds quick. |
