What are the usual reasons for a validation request?

"You must provide your original photograph when requested, along with the editing steps used to create your submission."

Either someone suspects the photo broke the rules, or it finished in the top five -- all of those get validated, as do any which get elevated to top-five status via disqualification of a higher-ranked photo.
