Hi all.
I'm pretty new here but like it very much already. This is the second time I submit to DPchallenge.

Just wanted to say one thing about comments and voting. For the past two challenges, I've left a comment with 95% of the photos submitted. I have voted on 100% photos submitted. And I intend to try to keep it up this way because I think it's good to send a minimum of comments to the photographers so they know why I voted X on their photo.

Such a high amount of photos to rate and comment on can only mean one thing: many of my comments will be short and sweet. Therefore, some might interprete them as being rude. For instance, if I was to leave a comment like: "Cliché. Well executed. Average. 6" , see it for what it really is. It just means: "To my personal taste, I beleive this shot is a bit cliché. I might be wrong, but this is what I think. But I do think it is a shot well executed. All in all, when I look at the shot, I think it is above average and I give you 6/10 on it. Congrats! See you next week."

I'm just posting this message because the number of photos submitted to the challenges is getting quite high. I'm sure others out there also want to send as many comments as possible with their rating. If someone is to spend an average of one minute per photo, this means (in this challenge) 256 minutes. That's over 4 hours. I think you'll forgive me if my comments are short and sweet, and sometime cold. I will, in return, forgive you as well. :-) LOL

Seriously though, this is something to consider.

Best of luck to all! And keep shooting!

Martin, welcome to the site and thanks for the post :)

One note... try to be kind with the term 'cliche'. Keep in mind that, to a novice photographer, nothing is cliche. It's a learning experience for everyone to do what others may consider commonplace. I have done it, and will continue to do it in the future... certain types of common shots are great practice :)

Hi jmsetzler,
you're right, every shot is good for practice. Still, if it's very cliché, might as well know it right away. This only means one needs to try to push his/her creativity a bit further than the first easy idea that crosses the mind. We've all faced that before, havn't we?
The site is called DPChallenge- so their is a challenge involved and photos are rated according to their quality, techniquality and originality.

That said, I recognise also the efforts into shots and always comment on the positive side as well, cliché or not.

The other thing about cliche shots is that because the are so 'well known'
and probably have been done technically very well, it is hard to do a
cliche well.

I think if everyone that threw around the 'cliche' term was forced to
do some cliche shots and try to achieve something that was of a very
high calibre (eg baby shots, or pets, or flower macros, or 'magazine
style/ fashion shots) then we might not see the term cliche used with
quite such frequency.

DrJOnes,

Quality over quantity please. At least that's what I'd like. I prefer someone to leave something meaningful and a bit more detailed than a quick jot of a note that doesn't help me grow as a photographer. While I'm impressed with your stamina in doing ALL of them I wonder how many others might not prefer a bit more of your attention also. Just my 2/100 of a dollar. . .

Good call Gord. If anything the challenges have taught me to look at things a lot closer for the work involved. The been there/seen that crowd may not understand that while it might LOOK easy 'taint necessarily so.

I'm very new at photography and DPChallenge - this is only the second entry for me - so if you leave a note that says "Cliché" I will not be offended as I would take it as constructive critisism (after I figured out what you meant :0 ). I'm more offended when someone leaves comments such as " hahaha...." just as I'm sure a more seasoned photographer would be. Sincere comments, long or short, are how we learn.

I am also concerned about the casual use of the word "Cliche". Not to pick on t DrJones because he is not the first person to do this.

I am with Gordon. The next time you think something is cliche..try to duplicate that shot to the best of your abilities. You might be surprised just how hard it is to get a great shot to turn out actually good enought ot be considered cliche. (I sorta know..I buy photography work and use it in advertising 10 hours a day in my job).
