Good link Tom, but I'm a little confused at the beginning when they say "News has leaked out..." - I would take that to mean that they're going off rumors (ie: if Canon announced it, it wouldn't be a leak would it?) as well.

"For many semi-pro photographers, this camera will bring the affordability of full frame, pro-body quality"

Apart from not being weather sealed or full height...

Yeah, and if this was a confirmation, I doubt it would contain the words "will in all probability retail for"...

Personally, I'm disappointed. I'm not looking for this type of a camera at all. I was looking for the 20D replacement.

Some good things to note is the move for Canon to a bigger LCD with more pixels and a bigger RAW buffer.

I'm hoping that the 20D's replacement has a slightly bigger than 6 RAW shot buffer and a bigger LCD, which are the main reasons for me to hold off on the 20D. Other than that, I'l like a better focusing screen and ISO on the viewscreen as well. The 20D was announced 8/04, so if they follow the 18mo cycle, then I guess the 30D will be announced Feb 2006 and available March-April for the Spring. I guess I'll be holding on to the Rebel as my main unit till then.

This isn't an official arcticle, I don't see where it proves anything. However, there have been posts on FM that show the man who put out the spec pdf, and that he works for a large publicity company. I think it's real but I don't know if THIS article was printed with proof?

"Canon confirms..." Right, the confirmation from Canon is not in the article.

it just needs to get officially announced so the price of the 20D will drop so I can get a 20D :)

James,
I wish for that as well. If the 20D was less than a grand, I'd probably buy it right away, regardless of what the replacement for it is like. But I've a feeling that the 5D is appealing to the type who have a 1DsMII and want 5D as a backup or those looking to do serious studio type work. I think the market niche for the 5D and the 20D are different and won't affect each others pricing. It may more likely lowere the 1DsMII's price in my opinion. But let's all hope.

Why? When Nikon puts the D2X sensor in the D200 (very likely) and you hang one of the excellent DX wideangles or Nikkor teles in front of it, the system will challenge the Canon 5D without any problem for a much lower price. Sure the noise is lower, but that isn't worth 3000 dollars. You have to wonder if a bigger brighter viewfinder is worth that to you.

[not seriously]With Canon's notorius AF problems no wonder all Canon owners want a bigger viewfinder to manual focus[/not seriously]

I read somewhere it's most likely an upgrade to the 1D mark 2. The article said Canon most likely is killing the 1.3 crop factor sensors.

makes sense to me ... also, it's good because the technology that goes into the 5D would also be implemented to some degree in the 20D upgrade (which is the one I want)

for what I want to do, not a very interesting upgrade.

hahah ya i hope nikon comes out with something killer in the d200. i think nikon should just let everything go and compress a d2x into a d100 body and price it like 2000$ i'm bummed how the canon 5d only syncs at 1/200th. blah

I think there is a mention of a 1DMII N, in the pdf for the 5d's spec's. Seems logical to me to upgrade the 1D, since it's the oldest in the line up. Under the Digic II processor, the first to come out was the 1DMII, then the 20D, then the 1DsMII, then the XT, and now the 5D? So next up for refreshing is probably the 1D MII, then the 20D, then the XT, and so on and so on and so on.....

BTW, Nikon RIP stands for Really Improved Product (D2X) :)

If this is for real, I'm certain of two things:

1) I'll get my $10 from GilP
2) The 20d used price will go down almost as dramatically as the digirebel used price went down between december and june.

Both are great and will make my purchase much easier on the bank account!
