I don't think you should be ignored. I think you should be exposed.

That I don't like Nigerians?

The US government has a travel warning for people considering Nigeria as a travel destination:

"The Department of State continues to warn U.S. citizens of the dangers of travel to the country."

"The lack of law and order in Nigeria poses considerable risks to travelers."

"Kidnapping for ransom of persons associated with the petroleum sector, including U.S. citizens, remains common in the Niger Delta area."

"Road travel is dangerous. Robberies by armed gangs have been reported on rural roads and within major cities. Travelers should avoid driving at night. Because of poor vehicle maintenance and driving conditions, public transportation throughout Nigeria can be dangerous and should be avoided. Taxis pose risks because of the possibility of fraudulent or criminal operators, old and unsafe vehicles, and poorly maintained roads."

"Persons contemplating business deals in Nigeria are strongly urged to check with the U.S. Department of Commerce or the U.S. Department of State before providing any information or making any financial commitments."

"Visitors to Nigeria, including a number of American citizens, have been victims of armed robbery on the road from Murtala Mohammed International Airport during both daylight and nighttime hours. Law enforcement authorities usually respond to crimes slowly and provide little or no investigative support to victims."

Do I want nothing to do with Nigeria? Wow, you're right!

(And that has very little to do with my web site suggestion)

Just to get back on topic - I tried this with two different codes, but it didn't work. Since this forum is hand coded and not phpbb, I don't know what scripts to use or I WOULD do this myself.

look, you may not like mavrik, who he is, or what he seems to stand for, but get real. there is absolutely NO comparison between nigeria and NYC. it's a shame when good people get lumped in with the bad, and it's even worse when good people don't have real opportunities to overcome their oppression, but i bet that if oppressed people had the choice between living where they are and NYC, the scales would tip mightily in favor of NYC, or anywhere else in the US.

I was exaggerating (slightly) with the "NYC" comment, but it's odd how you jumped right on that, and ignored Mavrik's justifying of his disdain for all Nigerians. By the way, I don't dislike Mavrik, per se, I just think he refuses to use his mind and finds it easier to "paint" with broad strokes.

FYI - you could probably do this with GreaseMonkey and Firefox.

*ppsssssst*

It is easier to paint with broad strokes. ;)

Tell me something then - how do I distinguish the scammers from the oppressed Nigerians? Because in my very extensive experience, the scammers will act like Reverends, Pastors, teachers, government officials, kings, businessmen, benefactors, regular Joe's, and pretty much act like anyone.

Yes, I use my brain - most of the scammers have terrible grammar. The next generation, growing up with even more worldview and English language will not have the same grammar and syntax issues. My brain tells me that if I deal with someone from Nigeria, I have a larger chance of being ripped off, scammed or harmed in some way than if I deal with someone from almost any other country in the world.

(I will never visit Brazil either - one of my friends lived there and told me way WAY too many horror stories about green light/red lights there)

I thought the whole point of the forums was to see how many people you can offend with your lens-snobbery while throwing in sarcasm hoping to catch off-guard someone who won't notice it's sarcasm? If not, i've been seriously doing something very wrong all this time :P

Seriously though (or is it?), i'm all for the antagonism and strife a nice "ignore poster" button would bring, i'd personally love to collect the most blockers on my profile so i can talk about them in public without them knowing... but i personally really prefer to see what stupid thing someone i hate has written, so i can take the piss out of them for it (and their garbage lenses too).

You should think twice about what you're writing thee skippy. I realize that Nigeria might be a bad place, but I'd be willing to bet KMD thinks it is also. He didn't choose where he was from.

Someone making a statement that they hate EVERYONE from Nigeria is a bit ridiculous. Sure, I say stuff every now and then in a joking manner, but it's pretty clear about Mavrik's feelings toward all of Nigeria. Imagine someone saying that about your country or lumping you together with the gangs in your state or something similar...oh and by the smilie in his post, I think you could tell he was joking (KMD that is).

think twice, deapee? interesting advice from you ;-)

mav said nothing about 'hating' anyone. that's how problems start, chosing people's words for them.

Bingo - I don't hate. I distrust. UTTERLY distrust. Will not do biz with. Will not make best pals with. Don't hate unless they are emailing me.

AND

WTF does this have to do with blocking users? I wouldn't block every Nigerian on the site (I would love an ignore button for them in reality!) - they can't do me very much in the way of harm here. ;) (Unless their posts are useless wastes of time)

"Scamming is reputedly (no way to really judge) the 3rd largest industry in Nigeria and Ghana. Would I be prejudiced against a Nigerian just for being Nigerian - chances are yes. It's not "fair" and it's not "right" but hell, I want nothing to do with anyone from that country."

"I deal with scammers every damned day. You're damned right if I could put them on ignore I would. And the scammers I deal with are ALL Nigerian."

"That I don't like Nigerians?"
...
"Wow, you're right!"

That's how problems start huh? Like there wasn't already a problem before I chimed in. OWNED ;-)

I would also like to add, that I don't personally care if Mavrik hates everyone from Nigeria, Russia, Finland, Sweden and Australia -- I really could care less...I might even share some of the views with him.

My intent was to say that you should back off of the guy from Nigeria for defending himself or his country.

block me then...No sweat off my back...I'll never seek your opinion as your thoughts or opinions mean absolutely nothing to me. You, on the other hand, should seek my opinion, as my thoughts or opinions could help you. ;-)

yeah... almost like knowing you've got to call the plumber, because no matter how tight you turn the faucet, something is still going to drip out.

EDIT

whatever, it doesn't matter, but you site council people shouldn't need someone to click the REPORT POST button every time something is offensive...use your brains people, you're active enough on the forums. You know saying racial stuff isn't allowed. If it is, let me know so I can start.

Deapee, I believe you are the best argument against blocking individual users. Though there have been many times other members of this site have told you that your comments/postings have been harsh or critical or hurtful in some way, I personally have witnessed a number of times where you have followed up with an apology and a clarification of your original thoughts in an "easier to take" manner.

If someone "blocked" you instead of giving you the opportunity to explain and apologize, they might never receive the benefit of knowing you didn't really mean it the way it sounded. While I may not always agree with your insights, I do respect your desire to provide helpful ones.

Thank you Laurie, I appreciate that. I'm a very passionate person and find myself caught up in the moment fairly often I guess. But I agree with you, no matter how much I disliked someone or didn't agree with something or anything they said, I would never block anyone...because there is every now and then where you do agree with something someone says, and sometimes everyone else is against them and you can throw in your opinion and help.

Nothing I say to anyone is personal...I may agree with you one day and be your only form of support, and disagree with you the next on another topic ... then you just want to ignore me.

--

Again, thanks for your kind words, Laurie.
