I'm choosing to ignore most posts in this thread, but .... you all see how much more work some dislikes cause!?

man it's all good how it is, you can't press an ignore button on someone talking to you in the street. These are both public places. If you wanna ignore someone start your own photo site and don't let em join. Kinda like your house, you choose who to let in. ....Or you can just scroll past their entry, kinda like walking by them on the street ...

Yes, but you can walk away, and if they follow you and continually cause harassment to those around you in that public space, you can call the cops.

Shall we continue this analogy or start a new one?

Yes, and if someone follows you and continually causes harassment to you and those around you in the forums, you can call the "netcops" by clicking Report Post.

Feel free to continue with the analogy.

I've called the netcops a few times. Only once ever seen a post removed or hidden and to be honest, that one that was removed was so offensive that if that person had honestly said that in front of me, I wouldn't have called the netcops, I would have punched them and gotten the netcops called on me instead.

The Report Post archives show that you've reported 3 posts since the feature was implemented. Of those, two posts were removed, and the third post, while not exactly polite, did not quite rise to the level of requiring action.

Seems like I've done more than that, but I'll believe ya.

This feature works elsewhere. I want it here. Some people are jerks, some people are button pushers. I'll use report post a lot more - we'll see.

Maybe some people think I'm a jerk. Maybe I think you're a jerk. Why don't you try to act like a grown-up jerk and realize that the world is full of jerks. The button pushers feast on people like you.

How many times in this thread did that same response come up?

"Some people are jerks, deal with it."
Why? I deal with it in reality everyday. What if, simply, I just don't want to? What if I thought "hey, it would take a simple fix and look, the annoying people would be gone!"

This ties in very closely to me with being able to block the rant forum. WHY limit that to just the rant forum? I want the ability to block or hide ANY forum I choose. The code would take 10 mins for that.

There are an awful lot of more important improvements that I'd rather see the admins spend that 10 minutes working on.

DPCPrints2? Never gonna stay ahead of the curve part-time. They had a built-in user base of which TONS of people have gone to Smugmug - same backend printer but it's ready today, yesterday.

New comment rec'd notification? I'd agree with this one. However, it's also a matter of convenience like mine, so not "more important" necessarily.

Better portfolio management - I'd agree. Implement this before my block users suggestion. I want to click next to go to the next photo in a gallery or folio. I want a better way to delete things from folio without opening 80 images.

User Last Online - more trivial than even mine, I think. :)

What suggestions?

maybe you just have a negative outlook mr. scrooge. maybe everyone isn't a jerk, maybe they are just as opiniated as you are. (there's some sarcasm there, I don't have anything against you)

the way to block out jerks in real life is to stay away from people, because you will always run into people you don't like. I think on the internet the same principle would apply, stay away from people.

nowhere is perfect man just deal with it. Plus, if everyone was awesome, then how would you appreciate them, you wouldn't know what a jerk was!

Somehow, perhaps through sheer force of will, I am able to ignore posts that hold no interest for me.

Mavrik, I can appreciate the fact that not everyone is as kind and helpful all the time as you might like. Still, what you suggest seems a bit petulant and as though you just don't wish to deal with people who don't meet your standard. Handling difficult people is a part of life, and the way in which you do it is more a reflection on you...rather than them.

Aren't you the same guy that once posted on his business website a message to clients begging them not to book you if they were too foolish to realize the extent of your photographic genius?

I'm sorry, I must respectfully disagree with the priority level that you've assigned to this web site suggestion. I do; however, agree with your assessment that "user last online" is unnecessary.

Matt,
I apologize if I have offended or irritated you with my posts. I know I have pissed off quite a few people here and am truly sorry. I know I do have a confrotative style of discourse, I guess it's in my nature.

And btw, I never saw you as a hard core ranter, but rather someone who really tried to make things better for the people on this site, like you are doing in the photo-business thread. Keep up the great work.

Nah, it's never the confrontational thinkers who bug me most. It's the head-in-the-sand doesn't listen to ANYTHING anyone types people. I love this site (most days) and want the experience to be fairly pleasant. Like last time, I'm not responding to any one particular post with this request. It's just added up to this feeling again that I wish I could turn certain people off as I'm certain they are never ever going to change, I'm never ever going to change, and reading them blather is a waste of time.

Thanks - next lesson for the class: How to write a sarcastic letter that NOBODY will think is funny.

(I'm a PRO)

See that list arrow at the top of this page that says "Thread Options" Click ignore and done. I am with the others that say thaey would rather see other things happen before ignoring individual users. Think if you ignored someone and no one else did. Now if they stated an answer somewhere in a threade and you just repeated it not even seeing there response and no one knowing you have ignored this person then, How would that make you look?

This is my opinion, nothing to do with SC or anyone else ...

Y'all do realize that when people block you you're gonna spend a lot of time performing the keyboard equivalent of whistling in the dark. I mean, who'd want to read stuff by someone who won't read what others have to say? If such a feature were ever to be implimented, this thread would at least provide a handy starting point for my "do not read" list. You plan to make this censor out certain people's images, too?

Honestly, if you don't want to read something by a particular person, use the little arrow at the bottom of the column on the right and scroll past their post instead of asking for a major site recoding to save you three seconds of site navigation.

I'd rather see the print site updated than have the admins spend their time hand-holding those with ultra-tender sensibilities.

And if your too laz to go for the arrow... get a fancy mouse with the mouse wheel!

Dear Mavrik,

Read this POST!!!

I understand what you are saying(which I totally disagree with) but when and if it is ever made possible to ignore individual users I would like to be first on that list of yours for you to ignore. You have really shown your class through this.
11/06/2005 12:14:50 AM · #96
man you're only 2 for 3 -- I gotta be at least 4 for 4 -- well anyway, I think my record is 100%...of course, I only report a post when it's something super offensive.

I can't imagine ever blocking a user though. I mean as much as I hate to read what some people write (because I'm afraid of the response I'll give), I still want to read it -- it's a curiosity thing. Like back in chat rooms, I never ignored anyone, just pretended to heh.

Sorry I think I make the top of his list as well as yours. :D Either way I could care less.

Mavrik, I don't think SC should be editing, removing or deleting ANY posts unless its racial, slanderous or harassing. You seem to have your knickers in a knot and its stuff you let eat you inside that makes you eventually go columbine. As for you punching someone out for not liking them or harassing you?, Dr. Ruth says " violence is caused by sexual frustration". My advice is go have a beer, smoke a joint, pull your pud or do whatever you wanna do but just relax.

Mavrik posted this in another thread.I, being Nigerian, found it offensive, but let it go until I read this thread.

"Scamming is reputedly (no way to really judge) the 3rd largest industry in Nigeria and Ghana. Would I be prejudiced against a Nigerian just for being Nigerian - chances are yes. It's not "fair" and it's not "right" but hell, I want nothing to do with anyone from that country."

I deal with scammers every damned day. You're damned right if I could put them on ignore I would. And the scammers I deal with are ALL Nigerian.

As far as people pulling up my words to "use against me" go right ahead - I have already said in this post that others would probably want to ignore me as well. So?

If people don't get my sense of humor (sarcastic letter to "clients") or think I'm a big dumb jerk (won't speak to Nigerians) then hey, YOU want this feature too! :)

It's a site feature people - it's in the web site suggestions not rant. Why is everyone so upset about a feature that would improve the quality of what we read around here?
