I support the idea of an ignore button, but with the addition that the ignored person would get "ignored by # of DPC members" in their signature, that way those that keep annoying people here soon realize that everyone ignores them and all their BS gets overlooked, so they must behave properly or quit DPC because they have nothing to contribute while nobody reads what they write.

and the ignore should have a time limiter, so if I would chose to ignore someone, it would only be active for 2 weeks or 4 weeks, and then their posts would become visible again, if their behaviour is still worth being ignored, then I would simply press the ignore button again.

what ever happened to the 1st amendment??? and the right to freedom of speech. I'm not even america and I can't believe the people want to have a censorship on a public website and one such as this where it is multi-cultural and so diverse. If you don't wanna read what someone wrote then just skip past it. I really can't understand what or why you'd wanna do this. Did someone offend you??? Better yet HOW did someone piss you off???

What you guys are proposing would be a coding nightmare. I suggest thinking up some other way of ignoring forum posts you don't care to read.

It's the 1st amendment, not the 5th. I think you've missed the point of the 1st amendment. It's to allow freedom of speech. Allowing someone to talk rubbish is very different to requiring anyone to listen. :-)

The First Amendment to the US Constitution prohibits the limitation of (certain types of) speech by the Government. It has virtually no effect within the confines of a privately-held company like this one. You are governed here by the DPC Terms of Service, not the Federal Government; just another one of the many advantages of DPC membership.

ok so sue me and since your up caling a lawyer get me another beer.

Todays cooking tip:
Try cornflakes and beer. add cornflakes to bowl and add 250ml or beer for flavor. If you don't drink the beer after the flakes are done you can always use it for soup or something. Right GeneralE? :D just like the rice. lol

Perhaps we should have a way of voting people off the island if they don't look like us or sound like us or take the kinds of photos we like or wave the same flag?

Or perhaps we could try to learn ot get along.

Place the beer in a shallow bowl set into the gound in your garden. In the morning, discard flat beer and dead slugs.

could just be me but this idea seems a tad immature.
to suggest the whole site changes because you dont like someone...
should moms change their child's class every time there is a kid in the class that their child dislikes?
Do you change jobs every time you dont like one of the employees?
There are things in life you have to learn to deal with and not just avoid. If you dont like someone just move past it...reading something really shouldnt get someone so crazy that they have to have it blocked IMO

My $.02... If you only want to listen to people you like and agree with, you should not be on a internet chat board.
If you don't want to read something, simply not reading it is a pretty good option. Just becasue it shows up on your screen does not mean you have to read it.

The statements from the thread in question by users... in question... were .accurate but also conveyed in a very harsh snobish way. Please take into consideration that not everyone has the means to spend money on the latest and greatest when replying to a question. If somebody is asking about a VW Jetta, would you point them to the BMW M5?

And now that commenter is known throughout the wired world as an ignorant rude boor ... how much more punishment do you think is appropriate?

The whole point of this thread isn't rude and snobbish?

Nobody pointed them to a BMW. I don't remember anyone suggesting L glass in that thread. Maybe I missed something. Phionbob said he didn't like his lens. Deepee may have been a bit harsh or blunt with his first comment, but he apoligized and explained himself. No one else said anything untrue about the lens or put it in less then polite terms. If Phinbob and Mavrik want to get all bent out of shape and defensive because they got stuck with some overpriced varialble aperture lens, let them. They'll get over it.

I don't even know where to start, so I'll start at the bottom of the thread.

Personally, I have a 70-200L 2.8 IS - I don't care about the initial lens I got now. I enjoyed my Tamron a lot. It's a great little lens for what it cost. I'm not bitter about having owned it! lol

Second, that one thread is not my entire reason for this post. That was a couple of days ago, not even in my most recent threads list anymore. Not on top of my brain and "oh wow I'm so bent out of shape about it." The thread I was referencing was actually more "whining" than "rudeness."

MK - there are sites that do already allow this and it works to whatever extent the people need. I guess if I didn't want certain topics to read strangely, I could unignore those people, etc if I wanted to follow a particular conversation.

Artyste - I hardly want to ignore everyone and fill the site with my own narcissistic ramblings. I try to answer questions, I ask them, I get and give feedback and try to participate. However, there are some people who just turn me off when reading the forums. I'd rather not have to be bothered.

Terry - immature? Your reply is an "immature" thought - you didn't read my entire post obviously. I didn't want "the whole site to change" - I wanted a FEATURE that I've found on other sites to be implemented here. Do I change jobs everytime I don't like an employee? No. Have I changed jobs because someone made me SO over the top angry everytime I saw them that it was not working AT ALL? Yes. Does that have ANYTHING to do with me wanting the forums to have a new feature? Nope.
---------------------------------------
Now for the major 3 objectors/commenters:

GeneralE: I don't want to censor out anyone's images, since that's the main reason I'm here. Second, if you want to block me, hey, that'd be your choice and to be honest, I bet I'd be in the top 5 to 10 of "most blocked members." I have irritated enough people, to be sure. You starting in this thread to block me wouldn't really bother me much, honestly.

For your next point - about updating the site - I was a beta tester for DPCPrints 2. I wanted it done too. It, and all the other "coming soon" features will be nice when done. Until then, smugmug does almost everything DPCP2 is going to do, why not use what's already done? (I don't use Smug, but it's an option).

Also - why is the web site suggestions forum here if not to suggest things? Are there other priorities? Probably, but your post assumes that my post shouldn't have been made. Makes no sense to me.

As far as my "ultra-tender" sensabilities - you're funny. Emotional, passionate, yes. "Hurt" by what someone on the Internet says about someone else? Hardly. Offended? Barely. Annoyed and sick of it? Muchly.

To it being a "coding nightmare" - it works and works well on other forums. Why is it "so tough?" Because D&L do everything by hand instead of getting stuff that works (re: search engine)??? Why do all this nonsense by hand when it's BEEN DONE BEFORE (re: smugmug)?

I guess this is the first or second time I'll say it, but the "entire thread" wasn't about Deapee. I don't care to "punish" people for me not liking their style. I just don't care to read it. Is it snobbish to want to move to a different part of the room if some stinky person stands next to you?

GeneralE - let's be honest. I can point to a NUMBER of times where you've been snappy with me. You don't seem to like ME very much either. You've removed my posts before, you've told me I "was no longer funny" in a post and you repeatedly "come to the defense" of anything I'm against. Wouldn't you LOVE to block me? Maybe that wouldn't work as SC, but I'm sure you could assign someone else to monitor my posts since they offend YOU.
---------------------------------------
Nsbca the actual thread that you posted was NOT what I was reacting to. Yes, it's part of the reason I posted this but it was not the thread or the poster who caused this thread itself.

Like pretty much everyone knows, I'm a ranter. My first owned site was rantings.net. I like to argue, I like to debate, and I've been known to fling names around in the heat of battle.

HOWEVER

The bringing down of people, daily pushing things aside, and UNNECESSARY (in MY opinion) attitude problem is really annoying. I'm not offended, my widdle feewings aren't hurt. ow ow. But it's terribly frustrating for grown adults to behave poorly.

DP - your comments in pictures are not only honest, they are accurate and helpful. Even when you don't approve. "it's decent, but" and "Something that seems to help me is to..." Your stuff DEFINITELY helps people and you've made more helpful comments in the last year than I have - it's not that I want that to go away, stop, etc. I don't have a "problem" with lots of your stuff. That thread, however, was a good example of the TYPE of stuff I'm talking about.

I've joined some of the threads you have been in without incident. As I said, not the ONLY reason.

------------------------------------------------------------
Basically, I know this is an option on other forums. It would be something I would use. I would like to see it here. This is the site I visit most frequently. It would be nice to have advanced features in the forums such as this.

Anyways, that about covers my thoughts on the topic. Feel free to igno...wait, just scroll past me. :)

quote There's a user or two that totally ruin my DPC experience unquote

Matt - I just dont understand how you can get so worked up to the extent that you allow people to get you in this state!

So you get a bit upset, whats the big deal? Why do you get so worked up about it?

Please dont be offended I just would like to understand why you feel so strongly about individuals opinions/views to the extent you dont want to read them.

Mike
