From my limited understanding of how japanese works, and the history of the Nikon name, it derives from Nikor, pronounced Ni-ko-ru, the ni indeed as in Nick or Toni.

With knee-kon, the first vowel sound is too long. It's much closer to "nickon".

The reason so few people know how to pronouce nikon is that its a rare word........
08/11/2005 07:25:54 PM · #43
it's japanese,

written in hiragana (their basic alphabet), it would be with 3 characters

にこん (ni-ko-n)

ni is pronounced as "knee"

i must say, i've never heard it pronounced as "nye-kon".

It really depends on who I am talking to... if it is locals (in the US) I say Nikon (as interpreted), for everyone else I say Nikon (as intended).

"knee-con" as pronounced by my Nikon suppliers from Japan, though they are not in the camera products.

EDIT: and I do believe Nikon is a Japanese company.

In Finnish it's pronounced like "knee-con" but with a short "knee". More like "nekon" maybe. The more I think of it "n-eye-con" sounds the US way, and so, as my english is 20% British (taught as school) and 80% Hollywood , it would be my choice for english pronounciation.
