Hello all :c)

I have a whole herd of horses at my disposal for photographing, and I'm looking for inspiration/ideas. I seem to get caught in "sports photography" mode with basic straight-on shots with little room for artistic vision. Does anyone have or know of any really exceptional horse photographs or have any tips or suggestions for some unique shots? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Try Robert Vavra's work. Also see if you can pull off that early morning backlit uber-sharp razorthin dof eye shot :-)

And dust. Lots of early morning silhouette dust.

Good luck.

I love photographing horses! My luck to be able to go to stables where Arabians are bred. The trainers get the horses out very early for training and that's the best time. My best shot got a second place in "Beauty" challenge in May this year and I'm very proud of it. There are some more photos in my portfolio as well

Royal Stables at Hummar

Good luck and be prepared to change positions often. What I also discovered was that the horses were always looking in my direction, they were so aware of me but I didn't notice until I saw the photos.

This is Lexie, a full bred Arabian. Done with the 18-55 kit lens and cheap polarizer. It was the last shot I took of her and it turned out the best or at least in my opinion.

I thought Ray (4N4M) did a nice job capturing this one...

Shot these in Mozambique after we rode them. I had the wet one on the right. Crashed it into the Indian ocean. Don't ask.

I don't have any advice to offer, but I just wanted to say that you're lucky to have horses to photograph.. if you can come up with an amazing photograph of horses you're almost guaranteed a ribbon here :)

Oh I envy you! Photographing horses is probably my most favorite. Here's a few off of the Return To Freedom, Wild Horse Rescue website.

I always love to gentleness of the touching noses:

I think this one looks cool from up above:

Horses in a group... horses solo... it's hard to take a bad pic!

GOOD LUCK!!!!

Might as well toss a couple of mine in here that I took just the other day.

I thought this was pretty funny, I didn't even see the tongue until I was done shooting.

For a final copy, I would definetly clone the telephone wires out.

Try the image bank at International Horse Photographers Assoc. and Equine Photographers Network Lori Schmidt, Cristy Cumberworth and Melanie Snowhite are fellow eq pros that I've lured over here, to their consternation (the "update" button, of course.) If you want to get serious about it, EPNet has a trial membership where you can read the archives which have a ton of advice on the different breeds, techniques, etc.

I do try for that artistic thing. One thing to watch for, try to avoid focal length less than 100mm (actual), to avoid the look of spindly legs and extra long heads unless you want distortion for fun. Thanks for the kind words, lhall and mk!
