Hmm... although Heida has a style, I don't find it repetitive in an unimaginative kind of a way. I don't see anything wrong with having a personal style, I can only dream of being so good at photography that people recognise my shots straight away. That is something to be VERY proud of. I don't think she rests on her laurels, every new image still feels fresh to me although it has a strong style.
Edit: It does sound like there are some sour grapes in the previous comment. Probably not the case, but it can come across that way.

i think to have a recognizable style is a great thing, if it aint broke dont fix it. There are diversified shots of hers to look, and the wood challenge was basic editing, so it aint all dodge n burn. this is a lot of analyzing one member here, just let things be an be happy you get to look at such a great portfolio!

Ms. Helgadóttir, you under rate yourself. You have entered 81 challenges and placed 5th or above in 27! A pretty impressive ranking I'd say. You present a formidable challenge for those who wish to chase you. Not that there are not other great photographers here to emulate, kiwiness being but one.

edit: for those who are math challenged that is 33% or she is batting .333. That would be million dollar salary player in the majors. To bad DPC ribbons don't pay the big bucks!

I am heida's number one fan. I'm thinking of moving to Iceland....Heida, got room?

A real challenge for heida would be for her to try to win a blue ribbon without using dodge & burn. Maybe in Basic, and maybe something that has a lot of bright colors in it; something that evokes a mood more cheerful and less dark and gloomy. Something that doesn't make you think that it was done by one of our Icelandic members when you see it. That would be more of a "gauntlet" than other dpc'ers saying that they are going to beat her in a challenge.

Here are a few ribbons she has won in basic editing challenges!
i suggest you do your homework before you say something like that and oh here is one with bright colors too while I´m at it

I was reading an article not too long ago with interviews from two of the top advertising whatever's out there -- they look for a style...every photographer should devlop a style.

Basically, they said they could look through someone's portfolio of only 5 photos -- if they have a good style, they will like it, and know what they like about it. On the other hand, they can look through another guy's portfolio of every pictures from the past 15 years and not find a single thing...find your style, master it, live it, learn it, love it.

I think it's a shame that others are being asked to change their photographic styles. If everybody here took pictures with similar styles, this site wouldn't be nearly as interesting to me.

I agree with the prior comments that it would be an honor to be identified by a particular 'style' - and for what it's worth, Nazgul's post definitely touches upon the fact that Heida is not solely successful because of one technique or look.

IMO Heida is an excellent artist with a talent I'd need two lifetimes to approach. If I had her talent I'd use it, but only for good and to help mankind :)

Mavrick made an obvious (and vey good) tongue-in-cheek compliment and look where others have taken it.

I've been hot & cold on the "Heida" effect, running from anger of it being nothing but Photoshop, to sheer admiration for developing a style of artistry that says wow. Have to have a great eye and image to start with.

I just admire now.
Beautiful work Heida. Keep 'em coming.

Makes us mere mortals work that much harder on our skills behind the lens and in the digital darkroom.
868 times chosen as a favorite, with her images being chosen 1749 times says something here.

forget a style and find a soul.............
08/08/2005 08:50:22 PM · #37
I think most of the people who have posted since my first post in this thread have misunderstood my remarks. It seems childish the way you all seem compelled to rush to her defense.

I like some of heida's work very much. If you check my favorites you'll find three of her shots there, and you can check the dates to see that I didn't just add them.

Having an identifiable style is something that many admire. Being confined by it can restrict one's creativity. And remember that this is a site that places a high value on anonymity in the challenges.

Nazgul, please re-read my post. I didn't say heida hasn't won ribbons in Basic as you seem to imply. Her "Free spirit" is certainly bright, but it doesn't have a wide variety of colors, and it almost looks a bit desaturated.
08/08/2005 08:54:26 PM · #38
and that is not aimed at heida........some of her work is absolutely marvelous, Create a style if you must but lock it away in a very strong box and only let it out when you have to.........otherwise seek a soul for your pictures and as 'bucket' quoted...find your inner eye.............

I apologize if I misconstrued what you were trying to convey. My response was (of course) a response to your post, but not necessarily directed at you personally - just a note of my opinion.

However, I think that stating one's opinion is anything but childish. I try not to get involved in threads like this very often, but this seems to have been an overarching theme around DPC lately.

1573 challengers have stepped to beat you in your last 5 challenges. SIX have finished above your entries. That means you've beaten 99.62% of the competition. "Very easy?" lol

And yes, I SHALL TRY! lol
(Ok, so I just got home and wanted to veer this conversation back to how incredibly great you are and how your run is something pretty much never before seen on DPC).

Hey Nazgul - I know you are Heida's number one fan ;) - and thus feel the need to jump to her defence every time someone makes a negative comment (which really isn't necessary anyway - anyone who can't recognise that she's extremely talented hasn't got a leg to stand on) but I have to say I find it pretty funny that the first four shots you chose in part to illustrate the diversity of her work are all landscapes with a solitary figure in the distance :). I know I've got at least a couple of photos of hers in my favourites that are nothing like that.

If we keep going like this she might just feel guilty and stop entering :). I daresay we'll all be thrilled at first with the availability of ribbons, and then thoroughly depressed with the absence of some fantastic Heida's.

I want her to continue to whoop EVERYONE. :) I love dominance.

If she does that she won't be picking up the gauntlet.

What happened to all the posters that are always complaining about "don't restrict my creativity" and who pray at the alter of "thinking outside the box"? This thread, and the other one about the effect of recognized style on votes, are really just challenging the successful/recognizable dpc'ers to enter something different. If you can't see that, and are hung-up by a little discussion of some of your idols that is not pure, gurgling praise, maybe you also should try to shake your mind out of it's groove/rut.

With all respect, I'm curious to know which of your photos you think are 'outside the box'? What is it about your photography that gives you the expertise and authority to be so judgemental about Heida's creativity?
So I think that she's an incredible photographer and have huge amounts of respect for the fact that she has built an inimicable style. I really wish I could take photos that people would recognise as being in a personal style. I think you underestimate how creative one needs to be in order to have such a unique vision that out of all the millions of photographers in the world you are recognisable.
I hardly think this opinion puts me into a rut.
If you are so keen to pull people down, you'd better be prepared for the same treatment in return... are you ready? ;-)

Heida is not on my favourites list for nothing! Her photos are inspirational!
08/10/2005 09:44:36 AM · #47
Ya know - this should be a disclaimer all the way up at the top, not here, but this is mostly a post in jest. I do want to try to enter again some. I do want to beat Heida, because she's the current standard bearer...

I hope nobody thinks I've put Heida's work or style or ANYTHING down in this thread - she's a fantastic talent and one of the best if not the best DPC has ever seen.

Just wanted to get that all out there as people debate Heida - that was NOT my intent with this thread. I know most of you know me and got the tongue in cheekness of this post, but just emphasizing....
08/10/2005 10:04:37 AM · #48
heida whats the name of the news paper you shoot for? i wanna try to find some of them
08/10/2005 10:13:22 AM · #49
Perhaps Heida does have a noticeable style that runs throughout many of her photos. But would anyone remember Ansel Adams if he did not?

Is she the world's greatest photographer...no...is she a damn good one...yes. Does that mean her style and work will appeal to everyone? of course not... I am sure there are people who greatly disliked the work of Ansel.

But if I had to put one thing forward about Heida is that she is "open-source". Just view her Post Processing II thread. Where she freely shares what she does for the benefit and learning of all. And that is quite noble.

Many people who have any noteriety of success often look down upon or become super-critical of lesser levels. Heida does not...sure she might critique and tell you straight up. But her intent is to help you improve.

I think what will be most interesting, will be to see how many ribbons are earned by those learning from her. And I thought it very encouraging when I received a PM offering to help guide me. Who was I that this very good photographer would take note and bend down to help lift my chin up.

Now, ironically, I haven't submitted a photo to DPC since...but I've been real busy and what shooting I've done has not quite fit into topic. (I've been off...and it bums cause I've liked the last 4 challenges.)

But soon, I hope to submit something. And I hope for it to be above my normal grade...in part thanks to some guiding from Heida.

Sincerely,
The Saj

This is a bit strong don't you think? Anyone is allowed to have a critical (as in 'critique') opinion. I don't think it has to be necessarily linked to personal talent and I don't think it requires a reciprocal judgement. If so, I would be too afraid to comment on a photograph again ;~)
