Hi guys,

I've been fiddling with retouching portraits with Photoshop. Results are great, but it's an equally great effort imho. Does any of you know of software that is especially designed for this purpose ?

There are programs around, but they usually come with a cost.

Virtual Photographer is a wonderful little plug-in that you can get for free, that has many ways to retouch portraits at a touch of a button.

Personally, I rather like the manual retouching, it feels good and I like the work, but on occasion I also like to have a quick way of doing it.

Anyway.. check out Virtual Photographer for now, and search the net for others.

If you're going to do any appreciable amount of retouching, I'd suggest spending the money on a good (or even a cheap) tablet/stylus combo rather than software.

I have been doing a reasnoble bit of retouching in Photoshop recently, and you can get quite quick at it with practice, and when using the correct techniques.

Here is my basic technique.
1. Copy the BG to another layer.
Do levels and any colour balancing there.
2. Make new empty layer and use the clone stamp applied to all layers to correct blemishes etc. You can easily delete any errors with the history or Eraser tool.
3. New layer and merge all visible layers into this.
4. Gausian blur of 4 to 6 on this layer.
5. Select Layer/Layer mask/Hide all (The image goes back to normal.
6. Click on the mask, and use the Brush tool with 30-50%opacity and white colour and a soft edge to paint over the rough skin areas to smoothen out skin wrinkles, blemishes etc. (Change colour to black to undo it).
7. Here you can maybe do things like whiten eyes/teeth if neessary.
8. Sharpen
9. Save.

I forgot to add.
You can save a lot of money on software, and retouching time by dumping your girlfriend, and getting a younger one with perfect skin!

By realy piling on the makeup, it makes your job easier also.
I recently did an impromptu (Spelling?) photoshoot & my model wasn't prepaired, had no makeup & had a bit of a skin problem.
Needed quite a bit of PS work. Came out well though.

Craig's Actions are some great portrait enhancement software.

I've had a lot of luck recently with Digital Gem Airbrush. I paid $100 for it, but it's been worth it.

I looked at Craig's Actions, but they seem to lack subtlety badly, and most of them simply replicate contrast and saturation boosts very easily available with Photoshop CS/CS2 standard tools.

You need one of those credit cards with "no preset limit"
