All...After reading the comments posted to my affluence challenge entry, I feel I have to post a quick note here. I am completely dissapointed in the narrow thinking on the affluence challenge. "Material Wealth" is much more than fast cars and big homes. To some folks a simple house or even a regular meal would be a sign of wealth. To a farmer, his herd or his crop can be a sign of affluence. It's all relative to your surroundings. To me, affluence is not about how much it costs, but how much it means to you. Just my 2 cents.

Affluence to me means being happy with what I have. I am rich with family love. I have a nice home, nice car, decent job, can buy almost anything I want within reason. But without my wife and kids it is useless.

I suprised to hear something like that from someone in the USA (One of the richest countries in the world). Your right to some extent. I didn't enter the challenge but from what I understood it was to show wealth or the extreme side of it.

Kongphooey I am so pleased that you started this thread. I too have been very disappointed with the viewers opinion on some of the images. I have received 3 comments on my entry and all 3 state it has no relation to the topic. Affluence is an abundance of wealth. Wealth is not necessarily money...but instead can be taken in many ways. Drought is a very serious subject and water can be seen as extreme wealth.

Think outside the square people.

Sorry, just my two cents worth.

You point is be well taken but the description stated "Knock us out with your representation of material wealth".

You really needed to show material wealth.

Remember man puff puff pass. lol keep on turckin.

Again..."Material Wealth" is different for different people. Doesn't have to be all about money.

kongphooey, sorry for going off topic and hijacking your thread. I will try to not let it happen again.

Yes I agree. You go and tell the farmers that water is not considered 'Material Wealth'.

And for the record I am not from USA or Canada. I live in the Outback Australia. Where water is scarce....hence material wealth...without it, we don't live...there fore it is a luxury...!

Defining a hard and fast line to what applies and doesn't will always be a difficult task. As with any other topic, it is a matter of personal perception as to how it applies. The thing to remember is this... titles are the key. Pick your title carefully so that it points the viewer toward your point of perception. Odds are, if they don't "get it", they won't like or understand it.

This point is right on. The description says it all. Anyway people ALL have different ideas of what Affluence is so if they did not see it in your picture then that is THEIR opinion. I think it is foolish to try and enforce your view of Affluence on others. If people don't think it fits the challenge than so be it. That is just their opinion. Accept the fact that you didn't reach a majority and move on. There are always other challenges.

Posting a picture that is outside of the box.. is a chance that you knowingly took and you knew going into it that there was a possibility of not connecting with others. It's just the way this place works it seems.

My intention here was not to try and enforce my view. I would just like to see a few more open minds.

I would counter that by saying that it all starts with accepting the opinions of others and not questioning their decisions. It just seems to me that this kind of post starts after EVERY challenge and I am wondering when it will stop.

I guess everyone sees a picture in a different way! What is an average photo for one may be a fantastic photo to another. It's the same with interpretations of a photo. People may not view it for what your meaning was!

One could argue, for example, that there's nothing more "material" than one's body, and no wealth more fragile or more easily squandered than one's youth. Getting the voters to accept this, though... THAT's problematical.

I expected this response from the DPCers. My opinion of Affluence is Power! With power comes control. I kept my picture within the box this time. I usually go alittle outside the box and as a result I get hammered. Most of the DPCers just do not see (and this is only sometimes) beyond the obvious. Its part of the game.

Not if most Canadians have any say about it. ;o)

Had a quick surf and one of the prevalent dictionary definitions of MATERIAL (as an adjective) is as follows:

Of or concerned with the physical as distinct from the intellectual or spiritual:

Whilst I'm totally and utterly of the opinion that the greatest riches I have are the love and friendship of friends and family as well as freedom from opression, freedom from hunger and the such...

where I voting, I'd also exclude images based on these kind of interpretations from my idea of meeting the challenge.

I wonder how many people enter without even bothering to read the description - challenge title only and jump straight in?
