if you can restore old photos, you might consider this...

a friend was going through stuff, and found a picture of his mother, taken in the mid 1920s. he took it to a print & frame shop, and asked them if they could fix it. they said, "Sure, but it will cost you $150."

he walked out and related that to another friend who told him, "You should call Skip and see if he can help you." so he did. and i am helping him. but not for $150 (although, after he sees what i've done, he might want to).

here's the original (at 640px tall). it will give you an idea as to what kind of shape it was in. if you want to test your skills, go for it (he's only interested in the image, not the border). if you would like to work on the full-sized scan, pm me.

edit: clarification: this is not a work solicitation, it is just an example of another way to put your skills to work!

That kind of stuff is actually fun, at least for hopeless PS addicts like me; and profitable as well :-)

Here's a not-so-quick take:

Started with the original, did lots and lots of cloning and a bit of global noise reduction (NeatImage), as well as additional NeatImage in selected areas. Corrected the colors to reverse some of the age-related yellowing.
I left enough of the "texture" to give it an authentic feel, not plasticky new while removing scratches and blotches that detracted. The crease was actually not the biggest challenge.

heyah, everybody!

this is really a great exercise, but let me clarify--this is only an excercise! and it is a doozie. i appreciate everyone's pm's and offers, but i only put this out for others to play with, and apologize to anyone looking at it as anything other than an opportunity to have fun with a seriously damaged image.

the main point i wanted to make was that you can make money at this if you can do it.

i do hope to see some of the other efforts, and hope ya'll are having fun. here's one of my earlier versions:

i'll post up my final version once it's finished.

edit: WOW, kirbic!!! your's is KILLER!

And if you intend to make money doing it, take your first check and buy a Wacom (or other) tablet--it is both effective and ergonomic.

a lot of photography stores offer this service. Don's Photo in Canada does for one. Dunno what they charge but I do know occassionally they are hiring for this position (I actually interviewed for one last year..they hired someone with an actual degree..makes sense).

And if you buy a Wacom, get the upgraded Intuos one, not the basic Graphire one. I have a Graphire which I don't use as much as I'd like to because I need zoom features, keyboard too much...ugh. but I LOVE my wacom.

Yep, after that little exercise, I agree!
It was fun to deal with an image that had that extent of problems. In reality, though, most of the problems were localized enough that not too much detail had to be re-created from nothing; the crease luckily missed both of the hands, could have been much worse)! I also took a stab at patching up the border, but left the dog-ears at the corners and some other "character marks". Overall, I really liked the outcome, and I'm anxious to see what others do with it.

//www.retouchpro.com has a few restoration tutorials. And //www.worth1000.com sometimes do restoration challenges.

I've never done any restoration myself, but I'm always impressed by what some people can do.

I definately don't have the patience for this. Here's my attempt with noticable flaws.
