This was taken with my Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM. I don't know whats happenning, but many of my photos seem to be "slightly" out of focus, just like this one.

It's possible that you were too close for that particular lens. Check the minimum focusing distance and then experiment with a subject that has lots of detail and is stationary.

Also, watch the shutter speed. It could be that it was too slow. The butterfly appears to have been flapping its wings. Even a slight breeze can cause blur if the shutter speed is too slow.

Eyes... you gotta show the eyes of the thing in macro work... The head is hidden by the flower in front of it. Definitelly try a different angle, a little higher. Like cpanaioti says, it could be you're trying to get closer than the lens can focus. I'm guessing You shot this at the high end (85mm) Generally focusing distance increases as you zoom in. My old 70-200 zoom couldn't focus any closer than 3-4 feet at the high end. The 17-70 Nikkor I use now can focus as close as about 1.2 ft, and when you have something that small at 1.2 ft, it's just not going to come anywhere close to filling the frame. Being as cheap as I am, I use some close-up filters in front of the lens, but what I really need is a good macro lens (haha... not gonna happen soon with my budget).
As far as lighting, it would pop more if the background wasn't quite as dark. it's a nice background, but since its wings are pretty dark, it's harder to separate from the background.
