I will have about 1000.00 for a new camera. Can you guys suggest your favorites? I know I ultimately have to make my own decision-but the best decisions are the ones made with good information and I can think of no better place to get real world info than from users. So please tell me what you have and why you like it-or what you would have done diffrently in your purchase. Any help at all would be most welcomed!

Yes I am definately looking to go SLR. I love my P&S but I want more control. That looks like a pretty good deal there. And thank you for the input!

Personally, I think this is one the best deal in dslr today.

/is a bit biased, but these lenses are probably the best kit lenses available...

I just got my Canon Digital Rebel and I absolutly LOVE it! It's my first SLR and I have no interest in upgrading at all, and don't expect to for some years to come. Take a look at it, and maybe at the Rebel XT, too.

This really looks good, the kit lenses sound great! And the dust buster filter must be very handy. I just wonder if the AF, image processing and noise level compare well enough with the 350XT...

I believe that for most people the technical differences between the top brands is so minimal as to be unnoticeably in practice. They're all good cameras. My suggestion is that you compile a list of 4 or 5 cameras that are from top companies and within your budget then go down to the camera shop and handle them all and try them out (fun way to spend a morning anyway). One or other of them will look and feel better in your hands. Buy that one.

Like everyone else, I dream of upgrading my camera and spend hours reading reviews. The reality is that it would make not a blind bit of difference to my photography. There are many more basic things I need to improve on to make my photography better.

Have fun shopping.

I would definately physically hold this camera before making a decision, to see if you like the feel. It is one of the freakiest cameras I have ever held...personally it's a little ugly for me.

While the Olympus is 900 dollars at B&H photo with the two-lens kit, there are various accessories you'd probably end up wanting - UV filter, memory card, and carrying case. This pushes the price over 1,000 dollars.

Here's what I'm considering for my future dSLR purchase:
Pentax *ist DS kit for $660 from Abe's of Maine, as well as a 1 gigabyte SD Card for 65 dollars after a rebate from Abe's. From B&H, I'd get a lens cleaning kit for $6 and a 52mm UV filter for the lens included for $9. This adds up to be about 740 dollars.

But first I have to wait impatiently for the money to pile up.

Good luck.

Lowell - go to a local camera shop and take the time to have them show you each brand name, Pentax, Nikon, Canon, Olympus. They will let you shoot a few shots in store and maybe even outside. Go with your gut, the camera that feels the best and is the most intuitive for you. Do not listen to us or the salespeople in the store. This is your first SLR so you are not yet invested in any lens system so you should go with what feels good. As said a few times here already all the brands in this price range are technically close.

Have fun and take your time with the process. You will live with this decision for a long time.

Good luck.

I just picked up a nikon d70s for $786.00 USD (body only-NEW) and picked up a Factory Demo Lens Nikon DX 18 - 70mm ED for 270.00 on ebay.

Personally I'm a nikon guy. But I came close to buying the Canon Digital Rebel XT KIT (with lens) but alot of people told me the lens it comes with in the kit sucks. But anyway it's up to you. IMO hold out and save your money a bit more and go for the Nikon D70s (or D70) or the Canon Digital Rebel XT.

Browse E-Bay. The wait is the worse part. So far I only got the 70-300 mm lens. Waiting for the body another lens and a 1 GIG CF card. Can't wait. Hopefuly I'll get them soon.
