Hello all,

Looking for some final advice before I call Canon Support...

I believe that my 20D pics are slightly softer than they should be, even with sharpness turned all the way up in settings. What I want to know is if others have noticed softness with their 20Ds of if mine needs to be recalibrated.

As an example, I have placed two pics in my porfolio. One from my new 20D and one from my old 300D. Both are with the same Canon 50mm F1.8 II lens and both have nearly identical EXIFs. You can see that the detail is lacking in the 20D image, but is that normal?

I would love some advice!

What's your ISO setting in the 20D. looks real grainy.

I also own both canon cameras. I find the 20d to have excellent detail. You need to check your iso and white balance etc. If you are still getting poor quallity pics then you should contat canon. The 20D is just an exceptional camera. The quality should actually be better than the 300D. When doing your test shots make sure the settings are exactly the same. Lighting, white balance, iso, and use a trypod withe the exact some subject. Just my 2 cents Kevin

I bought the canon 10D and was quite disappointed with it at the begining, for the sam reasons that you are mentioning, very soft focus and low detail. Then I thought, maybe it had been sitting around too long at the store and maybe the sensor was dirty... Turns out, probably it was, cause I brought it in for a cleaning and I can see a very noticible difference in the quality of the pics... In korea, a sensor claening cost only 6$ so I have no worries, don't know how much they are back home though!

Cheers,

That doesn't look right at all. I had a 300D loaner until my 20D came in, and the 20D was a significant and noticeable improvement over the 300D in smoothness of noise structure and detail rendered.

I too have the 20D and often think the images are softer than I would expect. I'd be very interested to see what Canon have to say if you send it in for a service.

I have played around with the parameter settings in a hope to sharpen images however, I've only got with mixed results

Look at the parameter settings, by default the 300D has the sharpening set higher than the 20D, the default on the 20D does 0 sharpening, so the pictures will be softer, this can be corrected in PS or if you want the camera to do it, try setting to Parameter 2 or a custom parameter. I tried mine on P2 for a while, but found that I prefered to do the sharpening in PS, its all part of the post processing for me.

Follow up:

I ended up biting the bullet and sending in my 20D for repair. Aside from being without the camera for a couple of weeks, the process was perfect and covered by the warranty. I don't know what they did with it, but overall, Kudos to Canon! :)

Regarding my original issue, now that I have the camera back, I can see a difference. My wife and I both agree that while the issue was slight in the first place, it was noticeable enough and we are glad we sent it in. Pictures are not suffering from softness or blurring like they were before, especially at 100%. Recent pic with revitalized camera (no post processing):
