I love flower shots. Unfortunately I think people got ticked off by the number of bad purple tulips in the Secondary Color challenge; there were a lot of nice ones too.

Here's the way I see it. I photograph flowers and I enjoy doing so. They're colourful, interesting to look at from different angles, and they attract bugs (which I like!). I try not to use them for challenges because after shooting flowers all last summer, they're no longer a challenge for me to shoot. Sometimes the challenge would work with a flower shot, but most of the time I try to challenge myself by taking a risk with a "non-safe" subject. I see a lot of photographers that do well on this site that stick to what's inside their box and dont stray too much from what they know does well, and that's fine if they're satisfied with that. I dont normally do well here but when I do and it's a risk that I took, I really feel good about it. As for the others... well let's say they were a "learning experience"

So shoot flowers if that's what you want to do, master the flower photography if you feel you must. Dont vote down flower pictures because they are flowers. (the same goes for babies and all other things cliche)

Speaking for my self, I'm not really crazy about the flower flood. There are way too many flower shots each challenge and it's starting to get boring. There's not much original now at days with a flower pic, although there are many of them really beautyful. They get a minus for lack of originality from me...

Flower Power...... not enough flowers - what about a flora gallery?(that might contain them so non-believers could be protected from their wicked influence) I have no suggestion on how to keep them out of challenges, maybe give flora a check off rating like nudes so that children cannot look at them. Also a gallery for roses, daisys, lilies, etc. would be helpful.

For those that don't like flowers and think they are just an easy way to get an entry, why don't we have a B/W flower challenge. Try judging that!

If you copy Gordon's link and paste it into your address bar it should work, or you can take the long route through his profile page.

Gordon, I really like the double exposure shot (I like most of them but this one stands out). Can't wait to see what's going to appear in the 'Abstract Aardvarks' folder! : )

Thanks - the last 4 in there were from my first ever roll of film in an SLR camera. Main reason I got it was to do things that I can't with a digicam. Next stop infrared.

If works copy/pasting it, the link is //www.dpchallenge.com/portfolio.php?collection_id=638

I am so tired of hearing people whine. "I don't like flower shots, I don't like black and white, I don't like the challenges, no one picks the challenge I want." grrrrrr...!!!!!! Do not vote then. Don't look at them. Don't submit. Go do something else. For pete sake stop whining!!!!!

NO, I do not like taking picture of cliches!
Will you shoot them in a house with a mouse?
No, I will not shoot them in a house with a mouse.
Not in box with a fox
Not on a train in the rain.
I do not like cliche shots, I do not like them Sam I am!

Try them you might like them.
Ok. I will try them Sam I am.

I like them same I am I would shoot them in a box with a fox
I would shoot them in a house with a mouse.
And on a train in the rain.
I like cliche' shots I like them Sam I am.
I will not cause any more pain I will rate them all high and give them all a score of 10, Sam I am. I will, I will. Watch me and you will see. I will give 10's to all cliche's.

Thanks! yours flowers are beautiful! and yes I love flowers and take a lot of flower pictures but I think variety is good for challenges.
No I was not upset, realized there had to be a problem somewhere.
I'm sure I could have used a better way to bring attention to it

I agree that there are too many flowers. But truth be known, some of the best images were of flowers. Not because of their colors particularly, but how the shots were executed, ie. lighting, exposure, framing, etc.

Let's have a FLOWERS challenge.

Or, to limit it a little/prompt creativity, 'Sensual flowers'? They ARE plant genitals, for example, and shots that somehow attempt to put that generative quality center stage could well be interesting. Though we'd get a lot of boring close-ups down the throat of tulips and such from people who don't quite get it. :->

(yes, I'm kidding, but only half)

we've been there and done that. Loads of great photographers have shown us the privates of flowers..see DougPaz for one example, I'm sure there are others. :)

In any event, we just did flora. So let the flowers fall where they may as we attempt to pursue other creative avenues.

I thought the flower submition titled "another flower" in the home sweet home challenge was very comical. it doesnt meet the challenge but it made me laugh seeing another flower in another challenge.
05/29/2003 05:12:02 PM · #74
It doesn't matter what the challenge is, there will always be flowers. The challenge could titled "Anything but Flowers" and you will still see 2 or 3. I'm not saying they are bad because even if they don't meet the challenge, some of them still blow me away.
