The release of these two cameras (LX1 & FX9) on the same day is interesting, not least because they are both claiming to have new aspect ratio selection of 3:2 and 16:9.
The LX1 has a true 16:9 8.2MP CCD which actually equates to only 6.2Mp in 4:3.
Strangely the FX9 achieves its 16:9 aspect by a different means - by letterboxing a standard 1/2.5" 4:3 CCD. Therefore you get 6MP 4:3 shots but only 4.5MP 16:9. Anyone can do that!
Am I being cynical or have they piggy-backed the FX9 into the line-up by *suggesting* that it shares the true 16:9 technology with the v interesting LX1 when it simply uses cropping!? |

I guess it's great for panoramas.. I think 3:2 is more than wide enough for me, however.

...off topic but how's your Canon 10-22/3.5-4.5? I've just tested one and I'm on the fence. I don't think you can expect fantasic results from an extreme wide-angle but I'd like more detail around the edges - you need to crop out the outer blurred portions which kind of negates the point of the wide angle!

Yes, 3:2 is good addition.
I recently offered to upload all the photos taken by everyone at a friend's wedding and get them printed. Little did I realise that while my 20D images fitted nicely on 6x4 paper, all of their 4:3 P&S shots had to be cropped. - A lot of work!

I've had two 10-22's. The first was soft on the LHS, so I sent it back. The one I've got now I like a LOT. If you're getting soft edges you might want to test a second copy.
You're right, at 10mm it gets a little softer, but at f/3.5 it's easy enough to stop down. At 22mm it has very pleasing quality - stopped down to f/8 it's not far off my 70-200/2.8L.

I also found the lens very useful for indoor event shots because it's so wide angle you can easily get groups in.
I have to admit I don't use the lens a huge amount because I don't travel often (enough), but I wouldn't travel without it.
