Im looking to buy a new lens, I have a 75-300 IS lens, and the 18-55 crappy lens, Im looking to replace my 18-55, i need an everyday shooting lens, does anyone have any suggestions

my everyday lens is the 50mm 1.8 markII lens

I know a few people that have the 17-40 L lens as their walk around lens.

I have the 28-135 IS USM on the camera most of the time though feel the need for something wider more and more.

Are you looking to replace the approximate range of the 18-55? What is your budget?

I have the 17-40 and its a great lens. I prefer the 24-70 as a walkaround lens though. If I splash out on the 10-22 EFS I may be selling the 17-40.

get the 16-35 or the 70-40
or the EF-s 10-22 for extreme wide zoom

I also have the 28-135 as my walk around lens. It's a good lens, under $750 and covers a pretty good range.

Edit: Though I will be buying a wide angle for the times when I need it - which isn't often enough to warrant one right away.

I have the EF-S 17-85 IS USM, and am very happy with it. It also matches well with your 75-300

Ditto on the 28-135 IS. :-)

I bought the 28-135 IS USM and like it alot. But here is an article that could help:

You should always stay away of lenses with focal range factors larger than 3.0 (dived the large number by the small number... the closer to 1 the better...anything about 3.0 is "medium" and above 4.0 will be soft troughout the range...and higher than that...yuk)

right now, the "hot" lens at affordable price is the

Tamron 28-75 2.8 XrDi it's probably the best price/quality ratio on a lens ever... at less than 500$ canadian...it's an awsome deal.

The Canon 28-135 or the Tamron 28-75 start a tad at the long end on a 1.6x crop camera, becoming a 45mm equivalent. The Canon 17-40mm is probably a better walk around lens for a 1.6x crop camera IMHO, but that's the way I shoot.

What range are you looking at? What is your price range? What do you want to do with it? Do you have a brand preference? Unless you state the above, I think most will just recommend the lens that they have.

I use primes for portraits or when i know image quality is top priority, so for a "walk around" lens, I wanted versatility, which ended up being the 28-135mm IS. It's an awesome lens, I was not expecting it to perform as well as it does (I've never liked zooms).

Im looking less then a 1000, Im looking for canon, Im looking for something with the smallest aperature, and max zoom to 75, because i already have that, but alot of you said the 28-135, ill look into that, i dont want to get a 20D specific lens because in a few years there might be (i cant think of the name for it) no ratio in digital i think its called full frame camera,

only one lens fits the description ... a used 28-70mm 2.8L

I think im going to get the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM, its a little big and heavy, but its the best mid range lens out there, that i read about, its a little expensive i found it onlin for 1200, does anyone have any experience with this lens,

Now we're talking. I'd recommend the Canon 17-85 IS, but it is an EF-S mount and won't fit full frame cameras. The 17-40L is f4 (a bit slow) and a bit short. The 16-35 and the 24-70L lenses are well above $1000. The 28-135IS is a nice lens and may fit your bill though it leaves you without wideangle coverage. If you are willing to consider non Canon lenses, I'd recommend the Tamron 28-75 XR Di (not sure if it fits FF), Sigma 24-60 to consider both are about $400. If you want 18-50 range, then Sigma makes a f2.8 version, but it's for APC-S sized sensor only.
Good luck

The 24-70 f/2.8 is one of the very best fast zooms that Canon knows how to make. It lives on my 1D II.

Thats probably what im going to get, i have only read GREAT reviews on it, just have to save a little longer,
Thanks For everyones Suggestions.

The Canon 24-70L lens is a great lens. You may want to go over to the Popular photography's site and see how the Tamron 28-75 and the Sigma 24-60 compare on their SQF tests. They rate very similar but cost a lot less. If you have your heart set on Canon lenses however, it's probably the best midrange zoom.

I had a similar dilemma; bouhgt 10-22/2.8 canon, 70-200/4.0 Canon, wanted to plug the gap. Couldn't afford the 24-70 L glass, was convinced to buy the 28-75 Tamron. Check out the images archive for this lens, including the circle challenge blue ribbon. Supposed to be coming in today...

What??? You bought one of those "cheap generic" lenses and the image didnt' look like vomit??? You're a liar!!! I know you used an L lens and am only saying it's a Tamron to get more simpathy. I bet you even used a cheap generic UV filter as well... ;)

I wouldn't trade my 24-70 f/2.8L for any other lens on the market.

I have the same lens, and John has summed it up perfectly. I'm aiming for the 17-40 next, as soon as I can get back to the States to buy it
