In english literature, which is better. Help me to be better or help me to improve? "Just a comment for literature." (Joke)

As for photography, I agree, Let the truth hurt. By making nice comments about the good things in my photo defeats the objective. I suppose the error is in the wording. It should not say "COMMENT" but rather critique. TELL ME WHATS WRONG if you can be nice in doing so great.

BUT REMEMBER SOME CRITIQUE COMES FROM PEOPLE WHO DO NOT HAVE ENGLISH AS A FIRST LANGUAGE. What may seem nasty, rude or out of context is perhaps normal for that person, culture, country etc.etc.

If the truth hurts, join a medical chat group.

Off the thread but where did you find a writing site? Really interested in this!

www.writing.com - They have some really good stuff, and they have some serious mediocrity. It's a good place to read other writers' work as well as post your own and get feedback. As I said though, DPC artists are more apt to be helpful (no intent here to disparage writing.com). They offer copyright protection on their site for your work. I don't fully understand the legality of it, but they post a notice with every item.

I said "this post notwithstanding..." : )

I've spent too long on the corporate ladder where many words are applauded above good sense. (Besides I'm old - and tired -- and sloppy...)

I am curious at what photo everyone is talking about. Is there a way to view it?

I don't mind constuctive criticism, in fact i appriciate it. Maybe I misundersttod what the commentor was trying to say.. I can handle your picture sucked... You're a horrible photographer.... But to say I am uncreative I feel was just plain Rude.. and just as the commenter had a right to make a statment I have a right to defend myself... I thought this site would be fun I don't care if I win loose or whatever.. I like the site.. I enjoy looking and learning.. But I do not deserve to be disrespected at all. this is just one of those your opinion my opinion things.. I retracted the post... I should not let the opinion of one person effect me it hurt my feeling I reacted quickly.. I wish I wouldnt have.. I cant change .. I know I am certainly no where close to even being one the top 100 photographers on this site you are all amzing but I do know I have potenial.. I love doing it and I know i am creative even if i am nuber 376 of 376 I know I am creative and my photography comes from the heart and the pure enjoyment of it.. everyone has a right to their opinion..... the commentor had a right to say i was uncreative I have right to be offended by that... I am over it I am repating myself i know.... I shouldn't of let it effect me I shouldnt have left the post.............

I would not so much personally. When you post an image in a challenge it is like a floating billboard asking for opinions. You must understand that any image has many different facets of nuances and while some of these are not important to some, they remain there to attract the fancy of all. You will receive some comments that will surprise you. Also remember that images invoke certain feelings in people.

Yes, there is no excuse for the rude comment. It speaks more about the owner than about the image. But these folks are not in the majority. The rudeness overrides the subject in question and it should simply be dismissed. Yes, some are rather disturbing but that is the character of these people and this is how they live their lives, so best to write them off and not become involved in any further communication. These folks will meet their match somewhere along the line.

I'm laughing so hard I have tears coming from my eyes. On this site I've received more than 200 comments and thousands have viewed my photos. This is something to be appreciated and I do! the best revenge is success. So if you didn't likr the comment it should inspire you to be better and more creative. Any other response if self defeat/pity. Good luck Photoholic! Keep shooting!

i am not saying I dont appriciate comments what i am saying is their is a line between critize and rude.. As I said in earlier post I regret posting this ... I do not deserve to be attacked by everyone...I have a right to be offended I made a mistke but the tissue thing was RUDE if you would have read you waould have saw that i regreted my statement......... not funny people feeling arent a joke and it not okay to treat peole like that ... To blantely disrespect by saying I am uncreative is rude and there is nothing constuctive about that criticism.......... so think what you want continue badgering me.. I really dont care anymore this is old .... I dont deserve any of this I have a right defend myself and speak my opinion

photoholic - come on - I know how you feel but tomorrow is another day andI promise you will feel better about all this! After my pasting about posting on a comment ~I felt like leaving it altogether but I sat back and decided I really did want to be part of the site and hopefully everyone would soon forget what had happened. I was even worse than you because I posted the comment!

Take a deep breathe it really isn't worth getting this upset about.

Take some great shots and show them!

what's weird is that i had a look at her comments she's left in the past (more than 400 odd), and they're all pretty decent, relevant and fairly helpful. i am somewhat bewildered.

I got one too. That is, a really long comment about that person not feeling qualified to comment on the photo. They didn't comment on the photo at all. I emailed the person, asking to replace it with either an I like or i hate (for starters) which would better suit the comment box, but they didn't respond.

I have it too...I've searched, but have found no evidence why she feels that way. (To avoid confusion, its' not photoholic's comment...just someone else who feels disenfranchised.)

Do we need a tutorial on accepting criticism?

I am fairly new to this site. I learned quickly that you cant take one person's negative comments too seriously.

You can learn alot about photography on this site. The huge majority of people participate on this site to learn & help others shutterheads, but ocassionaly you'll have someone who upsets you for whatever reasons.

Best advice is to ignore (I dont ignore very well myself). If you are offended by someone, PM them or if serious enough report them to the site admins.

But dont quit and dont feel itimidated if people gave you flak over posting your feelings. This is an open forum, post what you want, but be ready for not everyone to agree but also others to stand by your side.

Ive learnt to make every negative into a postive.. i truly found each negative comment i have recieved has been ( honestly ) validated, the truth always hurts us most... i think these negative commenters should be rewarded, because realistically they are the ones making me look deeper... and then i do my best to improve on it.....if i absolutely love one of my photos, and know it just might get neg comments, i don't post it....i keep it for me...but the rest... AHHH... thick skin is growing very fast, and i really don't think they mean it personally, so i don't take it personally.....

just my 5 cents worth.....

edit... can't spell

I have seen the comment and the photo.

"No discernible creativity or effort " to me does not seem and insult. It certainly and I agree, does refer to the photo and challenge of the moment.

It merely points to the fact that they (nor I) could see (discernible) creativity (YOUR). That certainly would imply that you have (CREATIVITY)but that it was not evident in this take.

What I would rather say and this forum is witness to is that, you are perhaps a little over sensitive.

Were my advice worth anything, prepare yourself for better and worse as time goes by.

I got some consolation for you. Most of the photographers on here are pretty picture takers, not artistic one bit, and it helps to have a big fancy camera too. Sorry for all those who are, and there are some don't get me wrong, I would even say alot, but most are just sunset, sunrise, teddy bear photographers.
When people have such passion about their work its a tragedy to see them upset about what other people think. Live it, if you love it, let the picture take you instead of the other way around.

Which is meaner? To leave a rude comment on someone's entry, or to select the entry as a Favorite during the voting phase only to delete it as soon as voting is over?

07/20/2005 09:41:08 AM · #50
My vote would be neither is mean.
